Well the other night on my way home from work, on a road im unfamiliar with i went through water and my cai sucked up water and bent a rod. I didnt know the road was flooded, couldnt see, night, and plus it was on a highway so no way of turning around or anything. anyhow ya it sucked up air, bent the rod. took it to the dealership not replaceable under warranty due to the intake, however, my insurance is suppose to cover it, theyre going down sometime between tomorrow an tuesday to look at it and get an estimate. the dealership said theyd have to order a whole new engine and what not. so ya im screwd, im out a car, they'll prolly put the factory intake on, and throw that aftermarket one away, i told them i bought the car with the intake. so ya im pretty much screwed, life is grand. so much for the springs and exhaust i was getting ready to order. i think im destined to have a stock car, right before i bought this car i had a check wrote out for my body kit on my old car and then the car got totalled. this time i had stuff saved and ready to go for lowering springs and exhaust and now this so ya.

This is one of the reasons that I have a SRI on my car. I had an intake on my Neon, a CAI. To all of those going with a CAI, I agree with Stueck and advise using the AEM bypass valve if you live in an area prone to flooding to the point where you cannot avoid the occaisional deep puddle. The part works pretty simply. Water will not be sucked up by an intake unless the filter is totally submerged. (It takes a lot of vaccuum to suck up water - more than one atmosphere of pressure). When the filter is submerged completely and there is more than one atmosphere of vaccuum inside of the intake pipe, rubber flaps on the bypass valve open and let air in. This intruding air makes suction of water impossible as the negative pressure inside of the intake is mitigated. Keep in mind that this bypass costs you a few hp, and probably the best solution of all (from a performance standpoint) is to avoid deep puddles at all cost in the first place.

ya, i was going to get a bypass valve when i ordered the intake but many said there would be no need for it and youd have to drive through almost a river type flood to cause any damage. well they were wrong, the water was not that deep at all 4-5" tops and thas after the waves. i just moved out here bout 4 months ago and i didnt know everything floods after a rain. in my old town it doesnt flood lke it does out here an i did not know that. i know now but its all far too late. im done with modding cars.

You know I have been putting it off for weeks but I guess this has givin be the push to water proof the CAI. There really isn't that much air follow down there anyways. Don't give up yet, live and learn. Use the insurance money to buy the forged block. You should have to buy the stock motor, the insur. company should cut you a check and then you can buy what you want. It might not be all that bad.

Keep in mind that if the water is deep enough, this can even happen with a stock intake. A guy I used to work with took a company vehicle home one stormy night, and drove through standing water that was much deeper than it appeared. The con rod looked like a wet noodle when it was taken out during the tear down. Sometimes, that's just the way it goes. I do feel bad for you. What are your plans once you get beyond discussing this with the insurance company? If the insurance company refuses to give you a hand with the bill due to the fact that your car had on an aftermarket intake, I would suggest looking for a low mileage engine through a salvage yard. Or, several importers exsist that import Japanese engines into the USA from scrapped home market cars. It's a good chance to pick up a FS-DE jdm engine, if you are so inclined.

i really hope i dont have to buy the engine an that the insurance will just pay for it. but who knows i have really crappy luck so. hopefully itll just get fixed and be done with it.

you seem to like doing power upgrades, ever think about doing handling? its hard to go wrong with handling, and to me it is so much more fun hanging a turn as fast as you can rather than just straight line speed.

well actually that was what i was getting ready to go for, handling. i just wanted a lil extra power with an intake an then this weekend i was going to order a catback and the goldline springs.
