Getting Check Engine code wtihout reader?

I know some cars you can get it so that it flashes the code at you (5 beeps, pause, 2beep = code 52, etc)... does Mazda have one on the '01 ES? If so can somebody please tlel me howto get there so I know what the code is before taking it into the dealer?

Or as an alternative: ANbydoy in the GTA (Toronto area) have a reader?

I think I should give more info before everybody starts asking

Yes this is a problem. The car also idles at below 600 when stopped, and on the highway if I let go of the gas pedal it starts 'putting' so to speak... It almost feels like the plugs misfiring, but those have been replaced less than 30,000miles ago.

Also, I changed the oil a few days ago, and for the first 30minutes after the oil change, it worked amazing. AFter that, back to the problem.

The car is an automatic, with 94,000km (about 58,000miles) on it. And I have the bumper-to-bumper extended warranty (for reasons such as this). Also sometimes when the fan is on I smell a gas-like smell coming in :-S... Any help would be great.

You need to change those plugs every 20000-25000miles! I suspect plugs or wires. You need obII code reader which is like $200. to purchase and under $100 to get dealer to read. (canadian) Or there are some shops that will lone you the reader and you buy the parts from them after you diagnose. They will probably need a visa# to lend the reader out. Hope this helps. But yourt plugs need changing right now anyways, so screw the code read for now. Simply replace the plugs and reset the computer by disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes. !

I'll do that. Also, any idea on what shops may have one to loan out? I know I have to change the air filter so I'm picking one up from crappy tire (would $59.99 for a K&N be worth it on these?).

Also what kind of plugs should I go for?

Gagan

Edit: I'm in Oakville Ontario if that helps.

www.harborfreight.com

Look in their AUTOMOTIVE TOOLS section. They sell a Universal Code reader for $40usd. Enjoy.
