But see here's the thing, I don't know about in Canada, but in the USA the KLZE was not offered in the MX6 or Ford Probe, it was a different KL motor, I believe the KL03? Anyhow, the US Spec 93-97 2.5 Mazda V6 was 163hp, which is also a nice swap because the compression is lower than the KLZE, allowing for boost. The KL03 loves boost, I've seen some good numbers from that motor. Being DOHC and 24V is nice too.

VERY stout engine, VERY boostable
Recommended, IF you can find one, not exactly an easy swap though

The problem is that 1.8 in the 99 proteges was used for like 1 year with only one application, but im pretty sure the mount possions on the 1.8 FP are the same as the 2.0 FS in the 2000+ proteges, so you could either snag a FSDE, and boost it, get the 170 hp FSZE or really looking into the KL swap. Ive been crunching the numbers a little on the klze swap and i think it can be done completely for about 3500$

1.8L is faster than a 2.0L to begin with, AND is better for boost..It's a tougher engine

The FE3 was not offered in the MX6/Probe, and it was not an optional motor in Japan, Japan had the same 2.2L motor that the USA had, but it does bolt right in. You will have to change some things, such as the harness of course. The FE3 was available in a few other Mazda vehicles. I do know that some people take the Kia Sportage 2.0L engine out of the Kia's and drop them into the Probe. The Sportage has a toned down version of the FE3 but is just as good if you swap the pistons out. I have seen a first generation Probe run low 12's with a turboe'd sportage version of the FE3. The reason why it's so much better than the normal turbo GT motor is that it's 16v and DOHC as opposed to the standard 12V SOHC 2.2L.
And of course, like mentioned, the FE3 is not droppable into anything newer than a 92 or so chassis. It is however workable in any Mazda that came with the 2.2 motor.

BS...I have owned 2 MX6 Gt's and I have been a member of MX6.com for quite a while...the FE3 WAS an MX6 motor, however in japan it was not called the MX6, it was just called the 626 coupe. It was also offered in some european countries as well as australia....
and I believe the first thing I told the guy was it is NOT an easy swap...ANY swap can be done with enough money behind it

The 'F'/'MA' engines were first used in the late 70’s in the 2.0 liter RWD 626 and B2000/Ford Courier. An enhanced version called the FE was introduced in the 1984 2.0 liter (86x86mm) FWD 626 and the B2000 pickup. The stroke was increased in 1988 for the 2.2 F2 motor as used in the B2200 and MX6/626/Ford Probe. None of the Mazda 4 cylinder heads are an interferance fit with the exception of the long stroke 2.2. All the F, FE and F2 motors had SOHC heads with the exception of the 1998+ 2.0 liter Kia Sportage which uses the block from the 1984-87 B2000/MX6 (86x86) mated with a new, very 'B' like, DOHC head. This engine was also in use in the Japanese only market 4wd 626 and European/Austrailan market 626 16V too.
2.0 DOHC 'FE3' motor in European market 1990 626 16V
In 1993 Mazda created a short bore spacing version of the F engine called the ‘FS’. It was used in the 1993+ 626/MX6 (83x92mm) and had a DOHC head. Although it is loosly based on the 'FE/F2' internals it is a new generation and not many parts interchange. The motor mount bosses are in different locations and the bellhousing bolt pattern is different. Same situation as the generation change between the 'F'/'MA' and the 'FE'.
