fs-ze engine

Hey everyone im currently thinking of buying a 1999 mazda protege. the only thing i dont like about it is the small 1.8 liter engine. I have seen some other people with the JDM FS-ZE 2.0 liter engine in the 3rd gen protege. my question is if doing the swap is worth especially since I want to eventually turbo my car, or should i just build up the 1.8 liter? any help would be helpful.

The 1.8L is a de-stroked 2.0L and most all parts are interchangeable.
The 2.0 is notoriously weak for boost applications, not the least of which reason that the head is weaker, having been bored to accomodate 2.0L.
So, you're better off keeping the 1.8 and boosting that. The JDM swap is not really worth it, even if you aren't boosting.
Hey, you bought a Protege. They handle well, but they take a lot of $$$ to be fast.
Build up the suspension and take it to the twisties.

^^ Gary is both wise and helpfull.

if it were me I'd buy some forged rods and pistons for that 1.8L throw some boost or spray at it and beef up the suspension some with some weight loss on top and you'll have a great carver on your hands.

definitly all good ideas.what about putting the JDM version of the motor(dont know the engine code, sorry) from a turbo MX-6.there suposed to pretty bad.

Roddimus Prime May-1st-2006 09:36 PM

eh.... a USDM BP-T would make more power for less $$ AND it's USDM....I know thats not as cool for some of you magazine racers but it works.

p.s. I'm not trying to "go off" on anyone or anything I'm just SO sick of everyone thinking if it's JDM it's cool or better. The jdm FS-ZE is SUCH a hassle to get working correctly over here it's totally not worth it.

I wonder if the KLZE engine would swap into a Protege'. People with the FS motor in the MX-6's and Probes have swapped them in, so I would think that it would just drop right in. Plus you'd get 200hp to start with. Unfortunetely, the KLZE is not a good engine for boosting either as the compression ratio is a bit high.

I like kargoboys idea personally.

chasis' are different BUT I have seen several KL motors in 2nd gen proteges with no problems. 3rd gens are a different story.

KL-ZE fits into 3rd gen like a glove. We have three poeples here in Quebec with the swap. The only hassle is the wiring harness. If you go with an aftermarket ECU than its no problem at all.

sounds good! I stand corrected.

You have any more info on this, cause this sounds interesting as hell

Well as far as I know, for the swap you need engine, transmission and both half shaft. I do know that 3 engine support fit bolt on, right, front and back, I'm not sure for the tranny support but I believe it fits also. I'd have to check on that. Like I said, the hard part of the swap is the electrical system. To find a motor, its relatively easy with tons of 626, mx6 and probe with the engine. Also, you need a curve neck intake, its the only one that fits if I remember correctly.

You can post a question on our forum http://www.clubprotegequebec.com/forums/index.php its a french forum but many members speak english like myself ;) Everyone is nice and will gladly answer your questions.

If it matches up on the mechanical end then it shouldnt be too tough. Electrical isnt a problem for me, my biggest concern was the mounts matching up. Any idea if you can use all the other existing systems a/c, alternator, radiator, and such or do those need to be replaced as well.

I just saw your thread on our forum. Just wait a little and you should get an answer. I'm the mod of the protege section and my nick is ES--GTNoir on the french board.

As for the use of the other system you mentionned I personnally don't know but if you can't get the answer you seek I'll translate your request for those who don't speak french and relay it to you.

Here's a link to phals thread on our forum, you'll get to see it in picture for real :D

One of the posters in that thread (lauzonjfmazda) says his co-worker has a '95 ford probe KL-ZE with chipped ECU for $4000 cad. That, or my french is really bad.
