Flywheel

fisrt my situation. I have the 6year warranty (i had to get it or i couldnt get the car the wifes stipulations) so i cant do to much, but i noticed that Mazdamotorsports has the flywheel from the Japaness MP3 it says the american flywheels are 18lbs while the JDM one is 15lbs.

i was wondering if 3lbs off a flywheel would make that much of a difference for 140 bucks. thanx in advance.

no i didnt get the life insurance. im going to keep the warranty. the main reason im asking is since its a genuin mazda part i can get it put on and it wont void my warranty. im just wondering if a 3lb difference 18 to 15lbs is worth the 140 bucks.

I beleive that anything to do with your clutch is not covered in the warrantee because it is a wearable item.
Someone (that knows for sure! ) clarify this please...

IMHO changing to the 3Lb lighter FW would be a COMPLETE waste of time/money.

a 3lb lighter flywheel sounds like a waste of money, but if the weight is taken off at the outer edge of the wheel it could be a good thing. it all has to do with inertia/momentum. (you know, a body at rest tends to stay at rest, a body in motion tends to stay in motion)

example:
it is alot easier to spin a 100lb log than a 100lb wheel. likewise, your engine will bemore responsive with a 18lb flywheel if it is 7 inches in diameter than it would be if it had a 18lb flywheel that was 14 inches in diameter. granted, your engine will also be more responsive with a 8lb flywheel with a 14 inch diameter flywheel than it would be with a 18lb flywheel with a 14 inch diameter. follow?

Installing aftermarket parts doesn't automatically void your manufacturer's warranty, regardless of what your dealer tries to tell you. The stock flywheel on the 2.0L FS engine is 18lbs, the 1.8L FP engines stock flywheel is 15lbs. The MazdaSpeed flywheel is 15lbs and doesn't cost much, because it won't make a big difference. Unless you can do the install yourself, I wouldn't even consider it. The labor to change the flywheel would be about triple the cost of the flywheel alone, especially at your dealership. Look into the FS-ZE intake cam instead. It's also a Mazda part if your still concerned about that, and it's not much more than the flywheel. Easier install too.

And aside from the size difference the two flywheels look identical. Mazda dealer would never pick up on the difference.

i was going to do the install myself. and im going to do the intake and exhaust cams also. im not to worried cause if they took the tranny apart for some strange reason it would be a mazda part and shouldnt effect things. I was just wondering if get a flywheel thats only 3lbs lighter for 140 bucks was worth it.. but from the responces i take it that it isnt worth it. thanx guys. , i guess ill find something else

I'd put the MazdaSpeed exhaust cam in the same category with the MazdaSpeed flywheel. It's probably only worth 1 or 2 HP if any. It's not very expensive though, so If you're going to install the FS-ZE intake cam, doing them together doesn't add much cost.

its cool man, like kincaid said. the dealership didnt MAKE me get the warranty. My WIFE did.

i guess ill just get the flywheel from SRmotorsports and take my chances that my tranny will never need to be worked on.

Why waste the time? Lawyers are just as bad as salespeople in my book...
