FI question

I know this is probably a stupid question, but my lack of Protege FI knowlege and my growing curiosity on the topic has me asking....does the Mazdaspeed FS-DE engine have built internals or is it just basically the same engine internals I have in my sedan with a mild turbo slapped on it? Details please... I know the cams are different but I am curious about the crank, piston and rods. In other words, could I turbo my car with about the same amount of boost as a stock MSP and still have a reliable car, without rebuilding my engine?

It's the same exact engine as the rest of us. Except it has a different valve somewhere in the vacuum lines that make it and FS-DET.

it has a check valve off the intake manifold that keeps boost from pressurizing the crankcase. This isn't a major issue at all. The valve can be purchased at a dealer for like $6. and installed with no tools in like 1 minute.

also there is NO difference in MSP cams and regular protege cams.

So in theory, I would be able to put a mild turbo on my regular old sedan and not have to worry about building the internals? I mean Im not going to go for like 15-20 psi or anything like that, more like 8 to 10. But I would much rather SUPERCHARGE it....... Just something to give my little sedan some zoom, and maybe catch some people off gaurds. I think 160 to 180 whp would do the trick for me right now, especially since Im an auto tranny. But my car does have 60,000 miles on it. Would this be a reasonable Idea considering by the time I can afford it, my car will probably have 5 to 10 thousand more miles on it?

and the MSP isnt even a well designed turbo system....really just a hodgepodge of parts from the Mazda parts bin with a T25 and a Callaway Manifold, and a few changes(not even very good ones) in the fuel and timing maps in the ECU....they pretty much just said "run it rich, and dial back the timing a bit"

i think you'd do better with a small turbo and maybe 6psi...no more.

really? no more than 6 psi? that seems very minimal but u are probably right. How much does a stock MSP run?

guaranteed an aftermarket system will make more power at the same psi as an MSP

ecu tunign I'd say...that and exhaust.

a stock msp has 7psi PEAK pressure...most hit 7psi and then drop off to 5.5psi.
