Hello everyone, this is my first post for a question. I just want to thank all of you for keeping me up to date with different things that are happening to the P5. So far I don't think that I have seen this question.

When I start my car either in the morning or after work, it will roll of but it sounds like someone is pushing on the gas. (I'm not) Has anyone had this problem or can anyone maybe take a guess at what they think it may be?

You mean you can hear the engine revving? Maybe something to do with the idle control?

How many miles on your car? I'm assuming it's still under warranty...I'd get it looked at by the stealership.

 

What do your RM gague read when this happens.

Probably just the choke.

It happens to mine too. its nothing to worry about all of them do it. I think it does this to bring the motor to operating temp.

I can hear it rev up for about a second then it just goes away, but it only does it when it hasn't been driven for many hours. If it is the choke do I have that looked at? My husband tells me that I hear stuff all of the time he calls them Shelley noises, but I know this one and he is never in my car when it does it. I have around 5500 miles on it right now. What do you think that I should do? It only happens in the morning and afternoon so if I take it to the dealer then it won't do it because it has been driven.

Most cars do this--the engine computer runs the engine at a high idle after a cold start, usually to help bring certain emissions-related components up to the operating temperature at which they start to work. My P5 revs right up after a cold start but then the RPMs start to decrease after only a few seconds. This is perfectly normal and no cause for alarm.

I think your just hearing the ECU kicking up the car on a cold start. It runs about 1500RPM on a cold start and then settles down to 500RPM when it is warm. Maybe you are just noticing the noise it makes when it revs itself up? Look at your tach when it happens. Tell us what it revs up to.

i have been hering noise frome my p5 too.

i hear it only when i start my car, as soon as it goes up in temp, it stop.

i told that too my dealer and he told me that alot of custermers complaind and that mazda is looking into it.

I noticed this too on my ES (about 900 miles). I thought it was strange at first because our 98 accord does not rev up to 2000 rpm when you start it cold like the Protege does. It starts at 2000 and slowly drops down to about 5-600. It'll drop to normal idle immediately if I take it out of park though. So this is perfectly normal and nothing to be worried about, right? (That's what a mechanic friend of mine told me, but he only works on cars that actually do have a choke).

 

I do believe there is a selector switch for this type of thing in expensive cars called the "summer/winter" selector button. The engine idles when it is cold at around 1500 RPMs to get the engine temp up (it does give it a little bit of zip too ). Do not worry about your engine

 

Are you talking about the Summer/Winter selectors by the transmission? I have seen those on Volvo's (and I believe a few other cars) but they just control the automatics shift points for added traction.

Actually, I like the way our engines rev to 1500 on cold start. It gets warmer a whole lot faster than my old truck ever did. I think its more for emissions than comfort though.

 

I can relate....my wife's P5 (Automatic trans) revs up to a cold-start fast idle speed a touch over 2000 RPM for about 5-10 seconds... more than the 1500 RPM that has been suggested as 'normal' here. She has also questioned this, as the lady here did ... this engine is inherently noisy when cold, and the high cold idle speed aggravates this...This fast idle speed is higher than other cars I have owned. Would appreciate some input as to whether others are revving to 2000+ RPM when started, so I can decide whether to get the dealer to check it out and adjust the 'choke' (just kidding about the choke part).
