I am using NGK plugs and I'm pretty sure the gap is right. Not wanting to rule anything out though, I'll check that too. Thanks.

I checked the plugs and they are all gapped at .044. They looked pretty clean too. Is there anything else you can think to check?

I usually put in regular from Speedway. The intake is OEM, no mods yet.

some gas stations use more water in there gas than others....like domo here in canada....i say use esso gas......don't know what there called down there but fill up with them and see if that helps.......sometimes its the gas u use that can cause this too.....just try using different gas than usual.....cheap gas is the worst for ur car......

I also use ngk wires and plugs. What the funny thing is, is that when I'm at the light and someone wants to race and I decide to floor it all the way into third there is no jerk motion or hestitation. I use speedway gas, hess, and sometimes 7eleven gas but that I dont think makes a difference. But I was thinking do you ever add any octane booster into your car?

I've never used ocatane booster. Maybe it's the Speedway gas we use I'll try throwing in some dry gas. Maybe I'm plagued by water as OCTANE suggests. I usually don't have any problems accelerating either. It's just at idle or when I'm at a constant speed.

Well I guess there is really nothing else I can think about. I just really dont think that the gas is the problem. I just have to figure out what is going on because this jerking and hesitating motion bothers me a lot, it just doesn't feel good.

Like TheMan said. Check your EGR valve. They can suffer from carbon buildup (from the exhaust they are recirculating) and it can cause them to not open and close effectively. You could also have a vacuum leak. Need a vacuum pump to test that. If you can take it off and give it a little cleaning on the parts you can reach. See what the inside looks like. If there is a lot of carbon in there you may want to go get a new one.

I have the same problem just with autmatic, not manual
I have a 1999 protege LX 1.6 automatic

It hesitates at speeds of 30 - 40 mph.
car will get to 30 or 40 mph and then the tachometer will
raise to 4 rpm before shifting to the next gear.
it will do that from 30 to 35mph. Tachometer will be at
about 2 1/2 - 3 before hitting 30 -35mph then it will hesitate and tachometer will raise to 4. then it shifts into the next gear.
Feels very bad. Mazda dealer are very busy here in florida
try many times to get it check out. Maybe I can take it to
another place, like a mechanic.
any suggestion?

Hey mesx7828 Is this a conspiracy or what? What a coincidence three 99's and all with 70k or above and all with the same problem, I guess this is something that every 99 protege will experience. Hey if you find out what's wrong post it up, ok. I will do the same. Thanks

mazda dealer said," I need a new transmission" going to get a second opinion. Three year old car with 78k miles having a bad transmission. Alot of mazda having problems with transmission. The 626 also have the same problem. This is something that needs to be address and brought up to mazda inc. . Mazda should have to pay to get this problem fix.
