Ebay SRI into partial CAI

Sorry I don't have any pics to post buthopefully I will within a few days.

I bought an Ebay SRI and have been very pleased with it. However I was a little upset with how the intake pipes actually get hot while driving. I was doing a little looking around under the hood and found a simple fix to end the SRI vs CAI debate.

TURN THE FILTER TO FACE AWAY FROM THE FAN!!!

It's very easy, I just used some tie straps to relocate the coolant overflow next to the radiator. After that the secondary pipe in front of the MAF has plenty of room to move but first make sure you position the IAT plug next to the filter. It is actually what measures intake air temp so moving it as far out of the engine bay as possible is probably more productive than anything else.

After letting the car sit in my drive for 10 minutes with the hood closed I took it for a drive and could feel a noticeable difference over the previous install. It'll be at the track on saturday night so I'll see if I'm able to pick anything up off it. Also, i'll try to post some pics for you guys so you can see what I'm talking about.

oh....that sucks. If I had a welder I would have made myself one. I mean the spool is 2 bends, and about 2.5 feet.

you shouldn't need a welder....it's just bent tubing...you should be able to make your own with a chop saw and some SS.

That's true, but I don't have a cutter either. I do want a compressure (sp) then a wiz wheel would do the trick.....but.

If you buy a compressor make sure not to cheap-out on it. Spend a little extra and get one thats not going to be constantly running or you'll burn up motors.

Also, cutoff wheels work but usualy won't make the nice straight cut of a chop saw since you have to hold the blade by hand.

When I first joined protege5.com I offered and sold a couple of "DP's" identical to that with no cat. I made up 10, sold 2 online and the rest I sold to a local speedshop. They are VERY cheap and easy to make. I believe my total parts cost was like $35 and I sold them for $200 a piece. They aren't really going to do anything until you eliminate the nasty S-bend on the turbo and remove ALL cats...hi-flow doesn't cut it on a turbo car.

sample pic.

This is what I've done to my turbo-pinto. The pic shows the stock DP and the new one...give you an idea of the difference. also, the MSP one has an S-shape so it's even worse than what I'm showing you in the picture.

very strange it won't let me load the picture.

It does look easy to make, and I gotta think the high flow cat is better than 2 stock ones. Also I understand the S pipe is a bottle neck but changing out all the rest of it behind it has to be better than the stock system.

it would be better than stock but you won't get ANY real gains from exhaust until you eliminate the biggest problem first....the s-bend. Another thing that kills the msp is that the largest restriction in the exhaust happens to be the very first thing in line...always put out the biggest fire first!

I wonder if that S pipe could be made by a local shop or would you have to order it?

So when you making me an exhaust?

Right before I got rid of my MSP I was looking at building one.....it surely won't be 3"....but a 2.5" pipe might work. Thats really all you guys need on these cars.

I'll get Zach to bring me his MSP and I'll take a day or so making two exhausts for you....mind you they won't be "emissions friendly" but they will work!
