Drivetrain mods (3rd gen)

I've been looking into drivetrain mods for my '00 1.8L Pro. So far, I've found out the '95-'00 1.8L Proteges use the F25M-R transaxle, which is apparently considered to be weaker than the G15M-R transaxle the newer 2.0L Proteges use. There are Quaife limited slip differentials available for both transaxle types from Mazda Motorsports. According to Mazda Motorsports, the flywheels should interchange between the 1.8L and 2.0L Proteges. The stock 1.8L flywheel is 15lbs, as is the MazdaSpeed chromoly flywheel listed on Corksports website. The stock 2.0L flywheel is 18lbs. Mazda Motorsports will soon be offering a 9lbs aluminum flywheel built by Design Products. I haven't verfied yet if the 2.0L FSD engine from the 626/MX-6/Probe uses the same flywheel and clutch as the two Protege engines. I know those cars use the G type transaxle, but I beleive the bellhousing is different than the 2.0L Proteges. I would like to find a lightweight flywheel and performance clutch to go with the quaife LSD for my car. There are more parts available for the 626/MX-6/Probe 2.0L FS engined cars available since they have been around longer. If anyone else is interested in these mods and has any additional info, please add to this.

Yes I've heard rumors of the 9lb flywheel. Know much about the Chromoly flywheel offered from corksport for the 1.8/2.0 they have the same part number so that would make me believe they are interchangeable.

That would hopefully be the next mod I do...I still haven't decided to go NA or "Forcively Induced" Those 10.5:1 pistons at $120 are a great price, since I have friends who can install them cheap now. But I just love the sound of a spooling turbo, or the whistle of a supercharger... I've got time until my warranty voids out to think. Opinions?

Are you sure about that? It would seem to me that the flywheel at least would stay consistent with the engine. Mazda Motorsports conforms that the flywheel exchanges between the 1.8L FPD engine and the 2.0L FSD engine even though they use different transaxles. The clutch I'm not so sure about. I hope they both work because I ordered the 9lbs aluminum Fidanza flywheel and CenterForce stage 1 clutch from http://www.rr-racing.com/. I guess if it doesn't fit, I should be able to sell it on ebay.

I sure hope so. I really want to be able to use the flywheel and clutch I ordered. Add the Quaife LSD and I should have a great drivetrain, ready for some more serious power.

I still never received that Email reply. Are you sending it to eeterp@hotmail.com? Anyway, please let me know how the flywheel and cluch intsall go. If/when you do get them on, I'd like to hear how it is driving up hill. I've heard lightened flywheels can cause you to lose speed going up hill. BTW, how much were the flywheel and clutch?

The flywheel and clutch were $505 shipped. Not bad huh? At least if they fit. According to several people on the ProbeTalk forum, there are no drivability problems with the flywheels. Check the parts out here: http://www.rr-racing.com/

That's not a bad price at all. If it works out and fits well, I think you just found a way for me to spend some MORE money . Are you doing the install yourself? Let us know the difference as soon as you get it on the car.

This is an update to my original post. I've learned that the '93-'97 Probe/MX-6/626 2.0L cars use a G25M-R transaxle that is considered stronger than the F25M-R, not the G15M-R, which appears to be new for the '01+ Proteges. I'm still working on complete information about flywheel and clutch interchangability.

I received the Fidanza flywheel this week. It looks great. It feels a lot lighter than it looks. I'm still waiting for the clutch. I'm still hopeful they will fit since I know the flywheels are interchangable between the 1.8L and 2.0L 3rd gen Proteges, even though they use different transaxles. I'm thinking now I'm going to order the Quaife LSD differential and have everything installed at the same time.

Eric F I was wondering what type of clutch you picked up with your fly wheel. I have a 03 2.0 protege and my stock clutch and fly are going to be need replacement. You gave a quote the price to be about 500 bucks for the set but how much is installation. If all has worked well for you on your set up , could you list your set up and where to get it for cheap. Thank you for your time.
