clunking noise

last weekend i went on the hunt for a new car.... (i looked @ 3 Mazda 6s, and 3 Skyline R32 GTSTs) and a toyota chaser..

but when they started up 1 of the skylines and the chaser... and opened the hood i can hear this clunkin noise... and its like a consistant one... every second or so on idle... but once reved it goes away (or i just caint hear it)

any idea??? i know its comin from the engine itself and das it... what could it be:?? i know not enuff info and all but what should i be checkin for when i hear such noises?? (in my mazda 323 i dont hear anything like it)

whoa whoa whoa wait!!

is it more of a metal to metal loud clank?
or a deep clunk?
or a metal tapping?
and is it very off rythem... like 3 clanks then quiet, then a few more clanks

if its like that immediatly check your oil.. carefully search for metal shards.. if their are some, its got busted bearings and would probably need to be rebuilt
a typical way of this happening is from high mileage and some oil changes, letting the car sit for months, the start whomping on it..

my 99' protege did a loud *** metal clank internally. i ended up just buying a new engine
