Cams, OBD-II

Just curious what everyone's thoughts are on putting cams into the FS-DE on a stock OBD-II ECU. Will the change in airflow/vaccum get noticed by the OBD-II and compensate for it by altering fuel and/or timing? Theres an interesting thread on msprotege.com talking about this which eventually links to a discussion on the Miata board about a person who experienced very little change from his relatively aggressive cams...

Thoughts?

Chris, unless you go with an extremely aggressive cam profile you're not going to have any problems. I think people often times like to argue semantics and idea's rather than facts.

If you'd like a nice "hot" cam let me know.

I'm still pondering selling or trading my MP3 and getting a Jetta GLI 1.8T, but if I stick with the MP3, I still want to do a header, exhaust and some cams (preferably something like the wagner ones if they truely help)...

I will really have to see some dyno numbers from the wagner cams.

I live down the street from Paeco (nationaly renowned engine builders). They quoted me $500 to have my cams hardwelded and custom made for my car with my mods. I asked them if there was any power to be had....they guy looked at me like I was on fire. "uh yeah!" We'll design it just for your mods and what powerband you want to be strong in.

I'm trying to buy Topher's stock set so I can have them hard-welded while my car gets dyno'd and then we'll swap the cams in and see what kind of gains can be had on a car with just intake and full exhaust....of course I'm sure the cams will augment the power of the supercharger also, but thats further down the road.

Chris if you're seriously interested, let me know and I'll see if we can get some group pricing

Yeah I decided to stick with the MP3. So I'll be looking for cams sometime soon. I just don't want anything that will turn my idle to absolute ****. A slight change in idle would be fine, but nothing where I'm going to stall out every so often. Also, I have 42,000 miles on my car. Am I going to need new valve parts (springs, shims etc)?

depends on how aggressive you want to go. I'm going to have a pretty rough idle because of the amount of work I'm doing withe the P&P and supercharger and all so I will be using new titanium springs. If you just want a mild bump you should be fine but pending cost it may not be a bad idea to just swap it all over while you're there.

How hard is it to swap out springs and shims when the valve cover is cracked open, and the cams are out? Are there all kinds of specialized tools used to remove/install springs, and check clearance?

My fiancee's dad is a mechanic and could help, but if its doable by the do-it-yourselfer, I'd love to take a stab at it.

getting the cams out isn't hard., Getting the springs out will require a special tool to keep them from shooting 200' away. You'll also need some sort of guage to re-shim the valves correctly. With proper tools (autozone's loan-a-tool program) and a HAYES manual you should have no problems.

if and when you do your cams, have a handy lil magnetic picker upper for those damn keepers and such.....they're REAL fun to re-install

Cams would def be a good idea..more air in..& out..means more hp.

also..by getting some EMS you can take adavantage of all those mods!

I work in a shop...partime..to make extra cash..and it's not really hard to do. But having air tools make it soooo much easier!
