B&M S.S. Stiffness

I just installed the B&M short shifter in my P5 and noticed that the throws require much more effort when shifting gears. Do any of you out there that have installed this shifter have this problem as well? I'm assuming that it may need to break-in a little, but I've never had this problem when I installed short shifters in my other cars.

i was told it is all physics(a class i never took ). making the gear shift shorter makes it more "work" since you have to move it in a shorter distance. i noticed the difference right away. you get used to it though.

JDM, it will loosten up a little as you use it....remember the B&M shortens your throws by 38%, thats a lot....thus as Aaron said it will make YOU work harder to move the mechanism.....you get use to it pretty quick.....mine feels great.

Thanks for the input guys. I was starting to wonder if I wasn't getting enough to eat. My wife is the one who's complaining about the hard shift, but I assured her that it just needed a little break in period.

Yeah, i think it has to do with the leverage. It's like when you use a wrench to turn a screw. If the wrench is really long , you only have to move it a little, but if it's (38%) shorter, it will require more effort. (or something :P)

how much the throw is reduced is one part of it. the other is how much the b&m stick alters the pivot point compared to the stock shifter.

if it shortens it above the pivot without altering below the pivot, then yeah, it's going to take more effort.

but it must alter the pivot, otherwise, what's the point of spending the cash? we'd all just be taking the extenders off the stick.

actually the B&M short shifter alters BOTH deminsions...it shortens the top..and it lengthens the bottom....this causes the pivot point to move UP the shaft...it reduces the travel....and DECREASES your leverage or mechanical advantage to move the linkage.....which INCREASES the force to move it...

I heard that the reduction was closer to 42%. Whatever it is, I tried it out in spikeyC's P5 (see tread in Western Canada section) and I loved it. Also, about the only thing I had to get used to was getting my mind around thinking that the gear was not engaged. Took about 5 minutes for that .

Yeah i noticed that mine was a little stiffer at first... but now i am either used of it or it has loosened up a bit...

it also doesn't feel like the throw is as short as it was when i got it... but again I think that is just me getting used of it and not the throw getting bigger.....

I am sure if i were to drive another car the shift would feel like miles!!!

Hey Cam next time you are over you can take mine for a spin around the block and see how it feels .

BTW I put in the Kartboy bushings and it is much nicer now. I find the shifts are more positive now.
