The ignition coils are located on top of the spark plugs, but you can't wire a tach to them. The ECU talks to the coils using computer mumbo-jumbo that can't be understood by a conventional aftermarket tach.
The easiest way to wire a tach to your car is to tap the tach wire on the diagnostic connector. Look for a big black plug in the engine compartment behind the driver's side shock tower and next to the wiper motor. It has a plastic lid that says "DIAGNOSIS." One of the wires going to this plug is a tach signal. On my 99, I think it's the purple wire with a white stripe; I don't know what it will be on a P5. Maybe someone on the list with a P5 wiring diagram can check this. Anyone? Bueller?
Good luck!
