AFC or No?

![Question](https://www.mazda3club.com/images/icons/icon5.gif)
I will be getting some mods for my car pretty soon including intake, headers, exhaust. I was wondring if I bought an afc or s-afc would it be beneficial to my hp gains or would it be a waste of money. If nobody has tried one or heard anything about it I am willing to be a ginny pig. I have heard that the protege's have terrible fuel mapping, could this help. All opinions are welcome.

this has been tried before. The mazda ecu will actually ignore any and all piggy back devices at WOT. You can have the s-afcii tune your fuel for anything less than WOT but as soon as the TPS senses full throttle it reverts back to it's base map.
Something to try (if you're inclined) might be to mount some sort of block under the gas pedal to keep the pedal from going down to the floor. With a volt-meter on the TPS you could push the pedal until it reaches peak...let off the pedal some and mark that spot. You will have to fiddle with it several times to make it work corerectly but there may be good gains to be had if you can override the ability of the ecu to switch maps on you at WOT.

If the output from the throttle is simply an analog voltage level, you could also find the peak voltage (and preferably current) and throw a resistor in line with the signal. Since you don't know the input impedance of the throttle unit, you may have to try a few different resistor values, but if you find peak voltage and current you should be able to make a good guess at the value. You could also make a small resistive divider (3 resistors) if you can only get the voltage levels. This way you wouldn't have to limit the pedal range. you can probably pick the resistors up at radio shack for $0.25 each, so that's another option.
By the way, does the fact that the ECU kicks back to base maps at WOT mean that the WOMP kit will run at stock maps at WOT as well, so the same type of modification will be necessary?

nope, the WOMP is completel controlled by the Haltech. Everything pertaining to fuel is run by it. When the ecu tries to pull fuel it wont because I'm controlling the injectors seperatly.

Ok, give me a chey big block and a holly and I can understand fuel, but you guys lost me wot and womp. I have thought about chips or programing for the protege but there are no chips and it coast an arm and leg to send off the ecu to get programed. so if ya can explain in simple terms this will help me out alot!
Thanks

basically the only thing that is KNOWN to work at this time is either a full standalone like MoTec or Haltech....and people have had realitive success with an MPI-tuner but I would never recommend one.

I may go ahead and buy it and if I do I would be pleased to have you help me Roddimus Prime. It would be a great project to work on, who knows we could start a common mod for proteges.

I would only advise buying it if you can afford to waste that money. Not that we can't get it to work but worst-case-scenario you don't want to be devestated uf ut doesn't work like you'd hoped.
