adjustable cam gears?

have anyone experimented on with cam gears? Is there even any one who makes cam gears for our cars? I read on an issue of sport compact car where a focus gain 20 hp at redline altho peak power wasnt as impressive. they did that by adjusting the camgears. If i remembered correctly...they retarded the intake cam 3 degrees. Just wondering if our car is as sensitive to cam timing. If it is wouldnt it be some pretty cheap horsepower. since cam gears usually go for 2-300..
