2nd grinds when cold
2nd grinds when cold
My car has around 3500 miles on it. When I first drive the car after it has been sitting when I shift into 2nd I can feel it grinding. And yes I do have the clutch in. I am going to have the dealer look at it when I get my oil changed.
This is my first manual car and when I first started driving it I would grind 2nd every once in a while. But it only happend 6-7 times. Is this what caused this to happen? Is the transmision going to have to be replaced? If so do they replace it with a new one or a remanufactured one?
My last vehicle was a truck and I had the trans. replaced by ford and they used a remanufactured one that was broke the day they put it in there.

I tried redline
I had the same problem when my car had about the same mileage (Pro5). And it would grind second whether you shifted slowly or normally. On the advice of various on this site, I changed out the tranny oil for the redline, but I found that it didnt make a difference at all for me. What I did find made a difference was putting more miles on the car. By the time I got to about 8000 miles it wasnt doing any more. It seemed like it was a break in issue.
Now instead of a grinding second, my clutch has taken to chattering/bouncing wildly on my first clutch use of the day... oh well
BTW, I'm betting the trannie oil that comes from the factory in P5s is synthetic. When I drained it it was real clear and had a pretty neutral smell, which I havent found to be the case with conventional tranny oil.

When that first happened I thought I busted my tranny or something.. Very Scary.
i have an appointment to take my p5 into my dealer tomorrow for this same problem! i have 11000km on mine and first drive of the day i always have issues getting into reverse (have to release parking brake and roll back a few feet to get into gear) and then first time forward everything grinds and bounces/chatters. until the car is warmed up (by driving, not by letting it sit running) it is difficult to shift into second and the gears grind like the cars being driven by a 16 year old kid who just stole his parents' car (and i consider myself a decent driver with about 8 years on a 5speed).
i'll keep you posted but so far the dealership has been very understanding of my problem.

BTW, I first started having this prob at about 14000, i'm at 16000 now and getting worried, cuz with fall and winter creeping up, i can only imagine this problem's gonna get worse.
There is no problem with not being able to get into reverse. It happens on all manual cars. Your owners manual even mentions it. Just go to neutral or first, and go back to reverse. It is because reverse has no synchro.

I looked, but can't find neutral in my 5-speed
Bizsnatch, let me know what they say
I have the same reverse ( &1st ) problem
thinking about giving the Redline MTL a shot
edit... anyone with the kartboy bushings notice an improvement?
