1.8L engines

I was reading once again the FAQ and I saw that US 3rd gen Proteges with 1.8L engine have " Horsepower: 122 @ 6000rpm"

European models have 114hp, what makes the difference?

I also found a label under my (-99 Pro) hood which says "smoke level xxx, smoke level yyy with turbo" so have they made these with turbo in Japan or anywhere?

?
European model has higher compression ( 9.7 vs US 9.1? ) but all other internals seems to be the same so the differnece has to be in the ECU.
But not sure.
