Angry Gas Mileage

Hi Guys,

Im new here and I have a few questions about my new protege.
I seem to loose alot of gas when I start my car in the mornings for some reason. when I travel short distances like 6 miles i lose about 1/7 of my gas. I don't know if it has anything to do with the cold winter, my mileage 96,000 or what. I have relapced the oil and it still sucks

Same here

I just got the car and noticed that i have gotten so about 80 km on half a tank of gas, it's ridiculous. I have an automatic starter so i start it in the morning for about 10-15 minutes and the gas goes like crazy.

well warming up the car takes alot of fuel. also what model is it? cuz if its the 1.8 then that burns more gas than the 1.5 like i have.

for me it takes nearly a half tank to get from NYC to school in Binghamton, NY. the distance is about 180 miles, but i usually have a couple of friends in the car and i do about 80. there are also many hills i have to climb, as the region is very mountany. so you figure i could probably do 360 miles (don't know in km), more or less on a full tank of gas.

And another thing you guys got to remember, the cold zaps the engine for energy, so naturally, people in colder climates, such as Canada, get worse mileage as opposed to someone in Florida.

It could also depend on the type of gas you put in. i only put in 93 octane in my baby. there are also many mechanical things, such as spark plugs, O2 sensors, and other parts that breakdown over time, thus losing not only power, but overall fuel mileage as well. so you may want to cheak under the hood and change some things even if it doesn't seem like it needs to be changed. you will see a difference.

That's perfect.

Thnx so much for the quick reply. You're number ONE!
So, 360 * 1.61 = 579 liters. That's perfect, and for mountains and stuff. I know it's cold here, but i got a lil over 300km per tank of gas, that's about 186 miles per tank. That's just ridiculous!
The tank was filled with 92 octane gas from ESSO (your EXXON) and i used to fill up my old car there all the time until a drunk driver totalled it..
The funny thing is i just got this car, and i bought from a dealer and they told me they did the 55 pt inspection. And i have had it in the garage 3 times allready, and the check engine light came on today after 2 weeks of owning the car. So, with the mileage so poor and the check engine light on.. I am hoping it's just eh Oxygen sensor. What do you think?? Brining it to the dealer tommorow.

The best mileage I got on my car was 420 on one tank, but those were highway miles.

murcielago, it could very well be your O2 sensor. that could be the cause of the check engine light as well as the crappy gas mileage. so i say when in doubt, just replace it, and make sure you check everything else also, and i mean everything. simple neglect can decrease performance and efficiency of a vehicle.
good luck

Turbonium959, that is some crazy good mileage, but that was just with you in the car, right? cuz my 360 miles is with some weight and hills, but it is also on the highway. it could be less also cuz i do like 80 to 85 which burns alot of fuel compared to like 65-70.

Yeah, it was me all by alone. I had to hike to a job 130 miles a day. But I was not going that fast, on average 70-75 mph.

i avg about 33mpg... mostly highway. i was a lil disapointed in the 1.5 standard shift... but then, if i wanted fuel economy, i'd have gotten a civic (dang! i just got done bashing at the help my friend not drive a civic thread!)

i just got my car, i'll tune it up come summer and see if i can't get a few more ponies and a few more miles, but as it is, it runs great after a new air filter, pcv valve, fresh oil/tranny oil and plug check. wires and plugs look good, and i don't see any crap in my tailpipe so i guess my o2 sensor is good as well. do these simple things if you have not done so already. TO DO LIST: check valve clearances (who has mech lifters these days anyways!?!?) and change plugs and wires... and maybe few other things as they come up.

my carb tuned nose does smell alot of "richness" from my car on cold morning startups.

Smile thanks for the replies

I am currently checking out how many miles i can get one gallon. right now im just past the half way mark and ive gotten 150 exactly. I think im gonna check out the air filter and spark plug like some of u suggested. Hopefully ill get as much fuel per gallon as that guy in Hawaii this summer. Thanks again.

Angry they keep changing things on me.

Hello all, well this protege is not doing anything for me. I got it back friday they had changed the PCV VALVE, and so that was ok, but no gas mileage difference. Then the check engine light came on again on sunday. And today i brought it in and they changed 2 valves for Evaporation (emmissions control or something) the service guy didnt even seem to know what it was himself. I am going crazy here. And he even told me that this shouldnt change the gas mileage and he doesnt know what it could be. A question to you mechanical people? How much is it to change the oxygen sensor, or is it possible to check it? Or could there be another problem with my car?? I read sparkplugs, wires how can i check this without changing everything? Any ideas, lets just say i spent all my money on the first down payment.

the cost of changing the O2 sensor can range. i mean i haven't changed it on my Pro yet, but on my grandmothers pontiac, it was like 100 dollars at a dealer, which was really expensive, at least in my eyes. if you can do it yourself, try. i haven't done it myself but i don't believe it is that difficult (get the Haynes manual if you haven't already. its very in depth and if you read it, you can do alot of the simple stuff yourself). as far as sparkplugs and wires, just pull them out and examine them, the electrode should be clean with no discoloration. if you plan to purchase new ones, go with bosch platinum 4's cuz they are good for the price and the burn is excellent. likewise get bosch premium wires, also a good choice. just remember the order you pulled them out because if you screw that up, your firing order will be messed up. aight peace.
