Air Conditioner Clutch

The air conditioner on my 96 protege recently died (during the longest heat wave of the summer of course).

The shop I go to said there is plenty of the refrigerant and the hosing and electrical system is okay, but that the AC clutch is not responding to the signal. They want to replace the AC clutch but have been told by their supplier that protege clutches are on "intergalactic backorder".

Has anyone else run into the AC clutch problem and any thoghts on how to get a clutch?

Yeah my A/C clutch and compressor fried and it was gonna cost me $500 dollars to replace it. So I decided to remove the A/C system and save on weight which increased hp and a special belt was put on that didn't include the A/C system, this also increases hp. Just tint ur windows really good and keep the windows rolled down during the summer and you'll be fine.
