i'm here in canada.. and while filling out paperwork on my protege.. i looked over the book.. i see that my model : 98 SE, it lists that it comes in both 1.5L, and 1.8.. now reading this.. i would have to believe the both versions would have the same frame, chassis, etc.. so then would a swap of a 1.8L in my 1.5 be easy?

 

Also the 1.8L from an Escort would do the same thing right?

 

The 1.8L BP will drop right in. However, I do not know about the Escort engines though.

i'm no expert at all, but i believe the escort engine should fit.

The Escort uses the BP as well. It will bolt right in. It would be a standard replacement.

 

the wiring harness may be different , as escort engines usually use the 1st gen protege harness. the 2nd gen harness may be different ...

I'm interested in eventually changing my engine (after i pay off my loan) I have been passively keeping track of the many engine change posts in this and another forum and have gathered that the 1.8L is the easiest fit. But i also keep hearing about these other gt motors like gtr, gtx and gts i think they are, sorry if i'm wrong. I also recall hearing that someone either tried to or did put a porsche engine of somekind in. Where can i do a little research on these engines for their reliability and hp before turbos so it will help give me a better base to go off of what i will be dealing with. Another ? is when i do this engine switch will my insurance sky rocket cause my car will be more of a sport car now?

 

Nah, your insurance will be the same, unless you call up and say "oh, so i have a new engine, blah blah blah, its alot faster, blah blah" and even then it would probably stay the same, because there is nothing on your policy that they could change involving the engine specificly. and id know this because i work at an allstate insurance agency on and off.

 

If a 1.8L will just drop right in.. do i have to find a 98 1.8L to match my 98 1.5? or will any 2nd gen. 1.8L work? Will i have to upgrade my tranny? (its automatic) and i'm pretty sure i have to get my brakes replaced to adjust to the 1.8L...

 

I am 99% sure that the BP 1.8L that came out from the factory for the G2 Pro are all the same. So, getting a 1.8L from a '95 is pretty much the same. And unless you want 5spd. I don't think you need to do much with the tranny.

Keep in mind that anything older than a 96 will be OBD1. You may have a problem with wiring, even though the engine will bolt in. Cars that are 96 model year and up require OBD2 engines. If you can only find a 95, you can swap over your wiring, injectors, and distributor to make it work in your car.
