My mom has a 96 with a 1.6 atx at 70k miles. Lately it has been surging at idle (....rrr....rrr....rrr....rrr....rrr.... You get the picture). It had the recomended tune-up at 60K. Any ideas?

Edit: It does this when you are at a stop after the engine is warm.

 

try an intial tune up- spark plugs, cap, rotor, oil changed, timing...

 

One thing you might check is the air intake hose between the air cleaner and throttle body. The hose was cracked on my sons '94 Protege and it idled poorly. Air leaking in that was not seen be the air flow sensor. Just did a tune-up on my '96 LX (the normal stuff to check at 140k miles) and the hose was starting to show signs of cracking. It's an easy fix though, just tape up the intake hose and go on your merry way.

 

i have a 96 protege 1.5 and when i come to a stop it does the same thing the enging seems to be like idling for a second then rumbles then idles then rumbles i have nooo clue what the problem is either

 

same here , 96 1.5. have upgraded ignition system also new fuel filter. Need to try replace EGR.
