Alternator Belt PITA

So, my wife's protege threw its alterator belt, and to get the belt on I need to untension my powersteering/air condition belt and remove it first. I undid the bolt that appeared to hold the power steering pump and loosened the tensioner but there was barely any play in the pump, not enough to slip the belt off. Is there something I'm missing or will I need to take of the hoses on the pump?

you need to loosen the bolts on the altenator.
They are located to the inner side and on the rear of the altenator. I don't really think you need to lossen the power steering belts.

Unless my belt magicly materilize through the power steering belt to get to the crank pulley then yes, I do have to loosen the power steering pump as it is being used as the belt tensioner.

You need to read more carefully what I said. Something tells me your experience with mechanics has been limited to installing an air intake, putting on struts, and painting your valve cover.

You have to loosen the bolt on the adj.bracket under the PS pump and the bolt that holds the pivot point of the pump it should be behind the pulley and access is through the holes in the pulley. Also if you loosen the bolt that holds the adj bracket to the block it will move a little more then back off the adj.bolt. Sorry if it sounds like a ramble I'm just taking it off in my head.

Yeah, I did all that but the sucke still wont move, took the bolt behind the pulley out, and loosned the tensioner bolt.

I think there might not be enough play in the hoses to allow it to move, but I'm tired and I'll look at again tommorow.

Sorry for jumping on your *** bruce. I was in a bad mood due to the car frusteration :P

Just replaced both acc. belts yesterday on my '96 1.8 and at first, the power steering pump wouldn't move enough to slip the new belt on. Turned out the bolt on the pivot point was loose but not enough. I unscrewed the bolt until it was freely rotating, pushed down on the pump with one hand and installed the belt with the other.

From your previous post, it seems you removed one bolt behind the pulley, was that the pivot bolt which is located behind the pump close to the engine (at least on the 1.8) ?

You do not need to remove hoses or anything else to change your belts. I can only assume the bolts holding the alternator and whichever other accessory it is aren't tight enough, or something in the system is stuck (basically the thing has just been together for a while and is being stubborn).

Once I'm sure the bolts are sufficiently loose that they're not impeding the movement of an accessory, and I still can't loosen it sufficiently, I have been known to put a piece of wood on the accessory and hammer the wood to loosen the accessory. This is probably an evil evil thing to do and if you screw something up, don't look at me.
