accelaration & RPMs

I don't know if it's my imagination but I don't remeber my 95 ES 1.8 DOHC Protege having a "pause" after accelerating. When I'm in 1st gear and push the gas pedal down a little harder than normal it takes like a second and a half to fully accelerate. Recently I replaced the valve cover gasket and everything looked fine. I also changed the oil and replaced the oil filter. Could I say that it's missing torque? Anyone know what it could be?

Another thing that happened is that sometimes when I'm at a full stop, the RPMs start dropping as if it were trying to shut off. I'm wondering if a sensor or electrical problem is arising. I unplugged and replugged the air sensor to see if it's working and immediately the motor tried to shut off, so I think that it works. Any suggestions?

when you "push the gas pedal down a little harder than normal" and then it "takes like a second and a half to fully accelerate" are you saying that the RPM of the engine comes up to where it is supposed to be right away and then the speed builds up? if that is the case, then your clutch is starting to slip.

If not, then a little more detail as to what the tach and car are doing during this time would be in order... is it just not getting to the RPM you expect as quicly as you are used to?

When I press the gas pedal a little harder than normal it goes "blank" or pauses and then the RPM come up along with the speed. As I said, "Could I say that it's missing torque?" I know what it would sound like if the clutch is slipping/burning but it's not that.

yeah ive noticed my car doing this as well. id floor it at low rpm and dump the clutch, and it would seem like the car would lurch forward after stayin at a certain point in the powerband. its like it is missing torque. it isnt the clutch slipping, its like the car builds acceleration in steps, not smoothly like it should.

That's what I'm feeling but I don't know if it's just my imagination or it's just that I'm not giving it enough gas before taking out the clutch or what.
