I posted this website in the earlier discussion of engine swaps:
http://members.aol.com/solomiata/MX5Engine.html
It gives the history of the 1.8L engine and from what it says i am assuming it is the same. My only ? would be on the mounting points, and wire hook up points, would those still be the same?

uhh no... the 1st gen BP is quite different from the newer ones.... the 1st gen BP has a different crank, intake manifold, valve cover, and block

I was told that the Kia motor has a few more cubic inches. I personally hate the ugly valve cover and I would assume that the engine mounts change slightly. Maybe not. I know KIA 69 is on this forum. Maybe someone can send him a PM.

ugly valve cover? Maybe u haven't seen them both yet, but they are the EXACT same except for 1thing. The mazda one says 'MAZDA' and the kia one says 'KIA' in an oval ring.
(if u don't like the overall look... u can always polish it.... lemme know if u need info on that)

The mounts are the exact same for a 97 ES protege and a 97 Sephia 1.8 DOHC. A friend of mine replaced the engine in his sephia with a protege engine recently (his Kia engine had a lot of miles and he needed a newer one to put nitrous on) and it was a simple drop in swap.

Also, both have same displacement.... 1839 cc..... unless u r talking about a mazda engine other than the BP 05 version BP DOHC.
