Timing Belt

What's up ??

I was wondering if you guys know at what point should the timing belt be changed......

As far as I know it should be between 90,000 - 100,000 miles but I am not sure...

Thanks,

from what I have heard (and on my last two cars with timing belts instead of chains) it was 60k miles.

Timing belt

My Hayne's manual says 48,000 miles, but that sounds a bit premature to me. I'm still runing at 98,000 with my original. Oops, I should probably fix that!!!

Yep, every 60k miles. Some of the newer cars have a 90k (or 6 years) interval, but the 1st gen Proteges aren't one of them.

Should you have your timing belt break, it will only leave you stranded, unlike Honda/Acura which have an interference design (if the belt breaks, the valves come into contact with the pistons, and you need 16 new valves (and if you're really unlucky, 4 new pistons).

I have a friend who was on his way to change his Acuras TB at 66k miles, and the thing broke. The tab was $1500. And he did all the labor (removing/replacing the head).

Davard,
If the timing belt breaks, you're saying that the valves and pistons won't touch? Isn't that bad for compression?
