"Thump" from rear when accelerating from stop

My 92 LX goes "thump" whenever I'm accelerating from a stop. I'm quite sure it's not anything loose in the trunk. Does anyone know what it is?

It sounds like some kind of rubber mount thats just worn out, for example it could be an engine mount that allows the engine to "buck" a little when you start from a dead stop creating that bump sound.

i have had a similar suspicious sound from the front right of my car the last two cold mornings. it may not be the same thing of course but you might like to make sure that it isn't the sound of a brake caliper releasing.......it only happens when accelerating from stopped.

my right front was making a small ??clunk?? cos the caliper was sticking. i found that after i braked really hard the problem disappeared. have no idea why its happening to me but it is another option for you!

surely the noise could just as easily come from the rear brakes as the front?

THis happened with my other protege (same year, dif colour ). I had it investigated and apparently it was my gas tank just knocking against the underside of the body, the dude said that its just gas flowing back hard enough to move the tank and nudge the body. I dunno, but I couldn't find anything else that could of been making that noise, so perhaps the dude was right.

is your car lowered,or do you have large wheels, like 17,or 18 inches..if so upon acceleration weight tends to travel to the rear, and your "thump" could be the wheel wells hitting your tires....also you may need new struts or springs
