Sunroof Swap

Anyone try to replace the steel sunroof in the early P1 (~1990)with a glass one from the later P1 (1993,1994)?

I have a steel one that is starting to show a bit of rust and rather then fix it I wanted to know if the glass one can be dropped in.

I believe the glass sunroofs are not stock. They are probably put in there after damage or rust has consummed the oem metal one. Just my 2 cents.

Where can you get them? Do you think the dealer would have them?

The reason I asked is that I had a friend a few years ago who had a slightly newer Pro with a factory glass roof (cool sliding sun shade and all). Mind you he wrote it off, I guess I should have bought the roof when I had the chance.

Atila:

The reason the Precidia has the slide out roof is because there is not enough roof length to swollow the entire sunroof.

The Glass sunroof came on Protege SE's in Canada IIRC.
A DX w/ sunroof and wing.

Also the 93 GT's had glass. Metal units are much rarer up here (canada) than glass. I think only the 90-91 GT's had metal, but it may have been all early 1st gens up here.

So, does anyone know if they are interchangeable?

I'm sure they are. Though one thing that would be different is the tracks for the interior panel that you slide back.. there must be some provisions in the headliner to do this as the metal unit doesn't have anything like this. I am soon going to figure out the diff, but I'm a bit short on cash ATM so I havent figured out the details.

Is there any interest from you usa-ers for glass units?

I think that if you can't find one, you might be able to go to an auto glass place and get one made, albeit a bit more expensive.......
