smoked out

alright...maybe someone can help me with this little problem................

my car has been smoking...out of the exaust...it only smokes when the car is "warmed up" (driving for at least 35 min.)

and only when i have been sitting @ a red light for a min. or 3

and accelerate to about 3rd gear... then it stops...this happens very randomly..like it won't smoke one day and the next it will..but only under those situations.....and the oil was low last time i checked it......

i was thinking valve seals or valve replacement.....

anyone been through this or have any ideas???? thanks...

What color is the smoke? Is it white or blue?

Well, if the oil levels are draining, oil might somehow be leaking into the exhaust, or mixing with something where it shouldn't be... I thought it put out black smoke though.

Does your car overheat or have you noticed a loss in power? It might be your head gasket.

That's what I was thinking, especially if the smoke is white/white-gray. You may want to have that looked in to.

Has your car ever overheated? If it has, then like RX7_2ner is probably right with the head gasket.

If the smoke was blue, then that's a good sign of burning oil.

sup,

i was just reading this post, and came across the issue of power loss due to the head gasket.... i was wondering where that was located... as i have been experiencing a power loss and i dunno if its normal with this car....but the temp gauge is inbtwn the cold and hot region. in the center to be exact... I always thought most cars had the temp gauge reading to a bit lower than the center mark.
has any of this to do with power loss....if not what can be another reason..... i was also thinkin that it maybe my air filter...
please advise

thanks

Hey guys. This is regarding the smokey exhaust. General rules:
white smoke-antifreeze leaking into engine
blue/white-blue smoke-oil leaking into engine
black smoke engine running to rich
Based on that i'd say you have a head gasket thats allowing antifreeze into the combustion chambers. so keep a close eye on the antifreeze level and the temperature gauge, mine sits dead center, right above the ball on the thermometer.

As for the the oil being low that could have been a coincidence. It always helps to know how much oil your car uses! I get 800-850 miles before I have to add a quart and that seems fair considering most of the time I'm shifting at 3- 3.5 k RPM , all day every day , except when shes cold. Hmmmm, I got an idea for my first thread!

Hope that helped.

THANKS FOR THE REPLYS......

after the post last night about asking what color the smoke was.....i was keeping a close eye on it today and it did have a blue tint to it.......

BUT CHECK THIS OUT....WHEN IT IS SMOKING WHEN I'M IN LIKE FIRST OR SECOND......I DO HAVE A LOSS OF ACCELERATION......

HOW CAN I BE DRIVING THE CAR EVERYDAY WITH A BLOWN HEAD GASKET.....

IS THIS COMMON WHEN A HEAD GASKET GOES OUT???

OH AND....IT HAS NEVER RAN HOT....THATS ONE THING I'VE NOTICED SCINCE I'VE HAD THIS CAR...THE TEMP GAUGE STAYS IN THE DEAD CENTER

again...thanks for the posts..

sup,

so u guys saying thats its normal to have the temp gauge pointing to the center.....another thing.....talkin of the antifreeze and head gasket ( still dont know where it is) i have loss of acceleration in the 1st and 2nd gear......but after that its runs well. as for the antifreeze thing, when i refill my reserve tank....after like one, one and half week it would be empty......am i burning it out due to a leakage somewhere or whats going on?

if you got pep boys or auto zone they should have sealer that you can put in the coolant system. a few of the RX-7 guys' car are still running with it and no leaks after a year.

it's actually block weld, and make sure you get the fornula WITHOUT copper. I can't remember the name of the brand, but there is a copper free one. the copper can cause problems in the collant lines. they should have it at most auto part/supply stores.

If you're losing coolant that fast, you may be on your way to a dead engine, especially if the coolant makes its way to the lubrication system (oil). I'd recommend having a diagnostic run on your car to check for hydrocarbons in cooling system and what not. Have you noticed if your oil has water in it, or has a milky appearance to it? If I were you, I would not put any "sealer" inside of the cooling system, that's only a "band-aid" in my opinion. The overall problem still exists.

The head gasket is a gasket between the engine block and cylinder head. It's quite an involved process to replace it.

sup,

do pep boys and autozone do diagnostic tests. Well i dunno if my gasket is done or not.....but i have the problem of my reserve tank for the coolant being empty. And the other issue would be power loss in the 1st and 2nd gears.
Is there any other reason for power loss in the car?
