Short Shifter

Does anyone know where to get a short shifter for a 91 mazda protege? If not, is there a way I could modify one to fit?

you can get the 91-00 escort shifter from pasecetter or B&M. mx3 shifter will work too.

I think that you'll have to change the bearings or some crap like that ....................I don't think that a short shifter could be a major problem...........

The only problems I've heard of from installing a short shifter has been extremely stiff throws. It all depends on the condition of your transmission, and I think you can grease the shifter bushings to help too.

[edit]
www.corksport.com sells both the b&m and the pacesetter last time I checked. To decide between the two, do a search it's been discussed many times before. I think it's basically preference.

I believe that the "problem " with short shifters is that it causes accelerated wear on the synchros because of the fact that you are shifting faster and it doesn't give your synchros enough time to match the speed to engage properly. Something like that.

thats true...thats the only reason y short shifter is bad on 323's is that u knowing u have a short shifter and u like powershifting it all the time.....

nopi.com sells the Pacesetter and B&M shifter kits for much cheaper than Corksport. just food for thought....

Would the Civic short shifter be compatible? I know that the name "Civic" is definitely different but I've done my own custom short shift and my previous Integra short shift. They work the same mechanically. So I was wondering if one could use the short shifter for Honda cars.

As for me, I took out my shifter, chop the section between the ball the bottom joint, welded a FAT A$$ bolt in between, and "Voila!" Short shift. From that day on, the shifts are tough to get in and almost resistant at times especially 1st gear b4 the greenlight. Additionally, my factory bushings melt easily due to the close proximity of my xhaust pipe so I had all the places with bushings pumped with nylon or PA6 if anyone is selling plastic raw material like I am. Nylon resists to heat and chemicals and lasts way way longer than those bushings. Try it out you guys!
