I was just wondering if I busted a CV joint on my front.

If I turn my wheel when im idle, I can hear a "creaking" noise like if you open a door with a rusty hinge. When im going about 70 m.p.h., I turn and i hear a cracking noise? Same niose when I hit a small bump also, I believe its coming from the passenger from wheel.

I can smell burning oil also. I opened the hood and see a very little bit of oil leaking out the engine. I got the valve cover replaced when i bought the car, can that be the reason why its leaking again??
Any help is appreciated hehe :-)

Thanks in Advance,
Earl

Im gonna check it later today. How long could i drive on it if it's the ball joint? I know you can drive on a busted cv joint for a little while just gotta take it easy with it... hehe

i know what it is now

I taken the passenger front wheel off (i believed where the noise was coming from) and found nothing ... I tried the driver side wheel, taken that off. Thats where i have a problem at. Right behind the brake, the rubber cone piece thing where i guess is suppose to have no cracks or nothing in it, is completly ripped! You could move it up - down side to side and its completely loose. Should I worried about that ?

-edit-
What is it anyway, is it a boot or cv joint (not very mechanically inclined :-) )

Since we cleared that up

Thanx for telling me what it is :-)

Now what would happend if I didnt get that fixed right away? I got an estimate from a local mechanic for $120 to replace the valve cover on the engine and replace the whole driver side axle. Is it worth it (i dont have the right tools nor the mechanically expertise to do it my self) .

If you went without fixing the CV boot, it will ruin your CV Axle.. with no Grease to Grease the Axle, it will eventually break, go out etc.. you'll also end up wit Grease ALL over the inside of your wheels, brakes, wheel well etc.. which you prolly already have.. Get it fixed soon... take it easy as it was said earlier...

You need to replace your whole valve cover?? If it is leaking by the Distributor you might want to check your Dist O-Ring.. Mine is a '94 DX and my O-ring was leaking fairly bad.. whe I pulled it out it was Hard as A rock, so you might want to check that...

I would say $120.00 is a good price just to replace the drivers side axle.. he gonna replace the whole thing or just the boot?? The axle costs about that around here, so maybe it is cheaper in your area..

I think i knew how it broke in the first place (cv joint?) Like 4 months ago, I had hit a median strip standing about 6 inches high or around that. I blew my driver side tires, need an alignment also. I bought 2 new tires and after driving it about a mile, i started to hear a very "dense" or a low thump noise every time I hit a lump/bump in the road. I thought i knocked out the supsension out a little and really didnt pay no mind to it.

The mechanic said a new axle with a cv boot and a new valve cover would run me around $120 with labor . I hope i didnt understand him wrong .. hehe

Im taking it where i bought the protege from. For $4200 dollars for it (last feburary) they better fix it... hehe

There is like a rubber seal hanging out my engine like an inch or a half inch. Its a black rubber that goes all around the engine i guess. Is that the valve cover? When i first bought the pro, It smelled like burning oil so i taken the protege back to the dealer and they said it was the valve cover. So they replaced that and didnt have a problem with it since the other day i started to smell a burning oil smell. Please correct me if im wrong ! You guys would save me money and trouble hehe

Thanx for the Info,
Earl

It sounds like the valve cover gasket yea..

The gasket itself is just a black rubber piece that fits in a groove in the Valve cover.. Easy to replace that yourself if you want to venture.. Take ya about 10 mins.. cost ya about $15 if that..

Hope it helps..

Repair costs

I am working at an automotive repair shop until the aircraft industry picks up, so I've been playing around with FWD cars for awhile. $120 is a freakin deal for those repairs, and if he's going to replace the axle, it's even better!! Usually what we will do if the axle is otherwise undamaged, is pull the axle out of the car, replace the cv and the boot, then reinstall the axle. After doing it a couple times, it's very easy.

on the oem cv axles/joints/boots always break around 100k...maybe even a lil less millege than that.

Ive had the same problems with my cv axles. You should go look at them and inspect them (talkin to all 1st gen owners). Casue if they feel tough...or look cracked get them replaced ASAP....its a horrible noise while turning.

not that expensive to replace either.

mine was a bitch to replace...

apparently the last owner put in some after-market CV axles. The axles were just hammered in crudely. This knocked out the little pins that remove that allow you to take out the axle properly. They had to take off my transmission to get at it, a good amount of money extra in labor...

That was my right CV axle... now the left one is damaged. Can't wait to see what they have to do with that one.
