Price Of A Rebuild?

I'm considering getting my engine rebuilt. I have a friend whose Dad has worked at the local Mazda dealership for over 20 years. He said he'd probably do the work for me for free, if I paid for the parts. So my question is, what all am I going to need to re-build a 91 DX engine, and most importantly, how much do these parts cost??? I need to know so I can give him the go ahead or not based on my bank account....

DX eh? so I'm guessing ur running a SOHC engine. I'm not sure how much parts would cost, but you might want to check into how much it would cost to swap in an LX DOHC engine, OR just swap in a DOHC head onto your engine....that might be more worth it...

Any suggestions from anyone else?

Yeah, I've considered that also, but I really all just depends on how much everything ends up costing. If the parts aren't too expensive I would absolutely LOVE to swap the heads and gain that extra 20 hp - 25 hp. My DX is getting slower and slower as the miles tick by and I've decided I can't just sit around and watch her die anymore. I've got to help her!!

I was thinking of getting a rebuild at one time and had a few ideas to increase the power since turbo or nitrous is not something I wanted to do anymore. I half-heartedly looked at getting my block decked, adding higher compression pistons, and maybe some porting of the intake manifold and head. It'd probably cost a pretty penny to do all this and the end result may put you right around where the DOHC engine is in terms of power. But when I asked the dealer how much a Mazda rebuilt SOHC with install would cost, they told me 4-5k so it seemed like either way I was gonna spend bean.

End result is I am looking to just invest the money into a nice P5 with a warranty. But in your case, if labor is free, definitely look at some higher compression pistons etc to increase power. Unless of course you plan to run nitrous or turbo, in which case have it rebuilt to factory spec since the stock compression on the DX is power-adder friendly.

my *impression* is that the labor is the MAJOR expense of a rebuild (IF the internals aren't overly shot); so if he'll do it for 'free'....

how much are u lookin to spend?

That's what I was thinking, and that's part of the reason why I thought that maybe this wasn't such an outrageous idea after all. I am looking to spend less than $500. Does anyone know exactly what parts you need when you rebuild? Most importantly, can I get these parts from NAPA??? I know the parts manager at my local NAPA store so if they have the parts I can get them a wholesale price (about 70% off)
