Hi gang!

Just wanted to let you know that there is a new kid on the block, er- old man, really- And I've got problems with a '94 Protege that I purchased back in May of this year. The thing has got 140,000+ miles wrapped up or around the odometer, and it has developed a knock in the engine. What this is really, is the #1 piston is striking the head, either because the rod bearing is worn, or because the nuts on the rod are coming loose. I crawled under the thing this morning and was getting ready to take the oil pan off, when I noticed that there was some black RTV sticking out from the pan. This here is a clue that someone else had already been inside there and tinkered around with the problem. At least they doctored it up, for a temporary repair.

I changed the oil shortly after I purchased the car, and ran it with Valvoline Synthetic 10W30, and had not a problem with it until a couple of days ago. I also ran a flush through the engine thinking that maybe the sump pickup screen was clogged. None of this worked of course- actually my LUCK!

What I want to know is if there are any discount parts places around in the Plano TX area?

And, also for you techies out there, is it possible to pull the engine without having to take the transmission with it? This is a 5sp stick.

And help would be greatly appreciated

Check on online websites, generally, they have the most competitve prices, and they buy in bulk (i.e., they buy it cheaper, and they sell it cheaper). When you figure in shipping, etc, you should find that you have saved atleast $10.00 doing the whole transaction via internet.
