and i think but i'm not 100% the offset was 42?
and you'll need a rim with a 4x100 bolt pattern

thats what i'm getting, i think some ppl have 18's on their 1st gens but i can't remember if i was reading in a 1st gen forum or a 3rd

Time for me to jump in Welcome to the forum, by the way.

I have a 17"x7" +40 on my 323, no rubbing. I haven't seen any 1st gen with 18"s on it... I'm not saying it's not possible, I just haven't seen any.

As for the SR20 debate, it sounds like a very ambitious project. It would be great if you could get it to work, but as you may well know, there would be a lot of headaches and custom fabrication involved.

The 2.0 fs series engine from the 3rd gen pros are a step down from the BP engine that came in the first gens. I believe the engine you have in the SE is a 1.8l sohc??? The BP is the 1.8l dohc, it was also in the Ford Escort GT ('91-'96).

The BP has as good of potential as the SR20 engine. Stock (with the restrictive head) make about 180 at the crank, i think stock PSI is like 8 or something. If you did a buildup of an NA BP engine, it has a much higher flowing head, that will give you around 15whp more, at the same psi. The internals on these engines are awesome. Not like 600hp awesome, but very good none the less.

Basically for the money you would spend on putting a 'stock' sr20 into the protege, you could have a very good running turboed BP setup. 200+ whp shouldn't be much of a problem.

You can get a BPT (the BP engine, but already turbo) for around $1000 from www.corksport.com.... You may be able to find a better deal if you look around. A good NA BP engine would probably be around $300-$400... This is all in US currency, I assume since you have an SE that you're in canada.

If you can find a NA BP, you may be better off starting there and buying the turbo/manifold/etc. seperately. The head on the NA BP is much better, as well.

To try to get a SR20 motor or mazdaspeed motor in your protege is a waste of money. Im not saying it can't be done im just saying its not needed. The power potential is there for the bp motor but the transmission can only hold 350 tq before it starts to show problems. The BPT (180hp GTX motor with a vj-20 turbo) im sure has been pumped to 400 hp.And god knows whats the GTR motor (GTX motor with strounger internals and a bigger turbo) can hold. You can also swap in a KL-ze (2.5 liter v6) to get about 200 hp NA. Do some more research and use the search button when needed. Welcome to the club ..Jon
