automatic or manual?

if its manual you have a burned clutch

Or for either your rear brakes may be dragging and would smell similar to burning plastic and smoke a lot.

Automatic your torque converter or whole tranny may be lunched.

hey man.. sounds like the problem we had with my step-dad's 87 ford aerostar.. first it started out as first gear not gripping well..and take high rpms to get going.. but after 2nd it was fine.... his is automatic.. so if yours is auto.. you're transmission is goin... suggest you get it replaced SOON before it gets barely driveable... if it's manual.. probably your clutch is burnt up.. go for a triple plate clutch lol..

Most autoparts stores will have a new clutch. IF you do it yourself, make sure you get the flywheel resurfaced, and you might want to replace the rear main seal why you have the tranny out. Otherwise, you can have a shop do it for $400 or so (just a guess).

It will only be driveable for a little while longer. Eventually, you won't be able to get the thing rolling, and all of your gears will act that way (slipping).

either way.....auto or manual.....the clutch is shot....

if yours is an auto....since you said its fine after second....I would say its the clutch plates inside..and not the torque converter.....

but your tranny (auto) or clutch (standard) is toast...that is for sure.

man that is EXACTLY how mine started...i had to redline it so it could INCH out of the driveway, then drive @ 5000rpm's just to go 30 down the road, after a while when it shifted into second it was all good. i suggest you get it fixed soon or you'll end up like my car and your tranny will be a sexy paperweight.
