home made short shifter question
i was wandering if it would work if i used a hack saw and cut my stock shifter to a lower point
i already have an aftermarket shift **** so i could glue that in place.
hell i already have a hacksaw so i thought this would be the cheapest way i wouldn't even have to take the shifter out.
would this work?

Actually if you think about it it would make the actual throw shorter.
If you look at a short throw shifter, all it is, is a stock shifter, shorter ABOVE the pivot point.
Since the area above the pivot point is shorter, it makes the throws necessary to engage each gear shorter.
Why wouldn't this be safe? So long as he doesn't change anything BELOW the pivot point it'll act the same as a stock shifter... just shorter.

alright, well, i'm offically confused. some people say shortening the length of the top of the shifter isn't really a "short throw shifter." they say that a true STS changes the fulcrom point of the lever. however, other people say by changing the fulcrom point it damages your tranny.
now, the way i see it, a STSs purpose is to make the distance your arm has to move, shorter. this makes for faster shifts. i know for a fact that the protege uses rods from the lever to the trans. so by changing the length of the lever below the fulcrom point it would screw with the trans.
i read somewhere that a "true short shifter changes the distance the trans has to move between gears" well, this makes no f***ing sense at all because thats impossible!!

its not safe because it makes it VERY easy to miss a gear, and
go into a gear other than intended. which is bad.

the thing that make a short shifter short is the pivot. lengthen the bottom of the shifter so that less throw is nessicery. you only need to lengthen about 1/4-1/2 inch. any more and bad **** start to happen.
Incase you didn'y know robert that is the theroy behind the short shifter you have in your car!!! Don't Bullshit or guessitmate. and yes if you extend the shifter too far you start altering the shifter geometry, and thus **** up your car. eveything in moderation, most people aren't going to drop the pivot point more than 1/2".
Macklum is rocking a homemade short shifter. and i like it more than the kartboy.

well seeing that the MP3 shifter is just shorter on the top and comes from the factory like that, i would have tho agree that while his method is a bit ghetto, it shouldnt be unsafe, except of course if the shift **** comes off...a better idea would be to cut off how much you want, then rethread the top so the shift **** will screw on...just a suggestion
