gross polluter :(

Damn, the champagne protege doesn't pass smog.

At idle (738) it measures 271PPM HC (hydrocarbon), max is 120. But at 2500 RPM it measures 32 (max 140) .

Any suggestions? I bought some plugs and wires, and a "guaranteed to pass" smog fuel cleaner thingy (the guy at the store told me it works! ) .

Tips appreciated

I sware , emissions testing is the worst. I am so glad that I only do saftey. It saves me so much aggrivation. Yet still I try to keep my car up emissions wise.
I would say to change the 02 sensor also. Your car uses the 4 wire correct.
change that , plugs, wires , disty cap & rotor (if it would make a dif.), check ur cat , check for exhaust leaks. clean the throttle body. put in new air filter. flush the engine ..
shoot do anything to get that car to pass

seriously? It's not really burning everything at idle. At 2500rpm it's fine!

I will change the plugs and wires. The only thing is there seems to be some rubber around the top of the plugs, making it hard to get the socket around it. Hmm WIsh I had my camera cable with me so I could show it.

I also have a can of "guaranteed smog" that the NAPA parts guy says he's pretty sure will work.

Check the intake filter and the PCV valve also.

Remember to warm the car really good before testing. Get that cat. nice and hot.

I'll be sure to get it nice and warmed up this time. I think it may be the O2 sensor. I'll change that, the air filter, the plugs and wires, and hopefully it'll be a hit.

PCV is listed as "PASS" though I don't know how they test that.

Protoss, how were you failing it though? Do they do a 2-speed test? (aka idle and 2500rpm?)

One thing you might want to try is to reset the ECU in the parking lot before it goes on the smog equipment.

...but like the others said, adjust your timing (make sure it's at 10 degrees), change your O2 sensor. Cleaning (K&N) or replacing your air filter will help out quite a bit. The more clogged your air filter, the more rich the engine runs.

I actually had the same problem, and come to think of it, my timing was somewhere around 14-15 degrees when I had it tested. I totally lapsed about decreasing the timing before I took it in and forgot to do it afterwards to get it tested again. I think I'm going to smog it soon with the timing at 10 to see if it passes. Then again, I have bad valve stem seals, bad rings, and the rod/main bearings need to be replaced so changing the timing on mine may not even help.

Any tips on getting that oxygen sensor out ? ?? I have the special socket, it's just in there damn good . Maybe I could find a copper pipe as a cheater bar. It's really frustrating me. After that I think it's worth another shot though.

I did, and the special socket tool just popped off and twisted the top of the bolt . I will unplug / cut the wire and use a regular wrench. worth a shot. gotta wait for the car to cool down now though.

I'll be doing the same thing tomorrow on the '93 LX that I'm buying. It threw a code for the 02 sensor. I'll soak that sucker in WD40 for a while before I try to get it out. That car has been sitting for a while so I'm guessing nothing will want to come out (it has 53k miles).
