CRX vs 323 ............

i have a 91 323 basic hatch and just added 3" drop spring 15" rims, steering wheel etc.......the car look nice with the front lip and the mid spoiler but with my stock sohc this car aint going no where. So i did a research (online) . I need a car for daily drive and be able to hit mid 15's street tires, full interior. and still be able to pass the smog. and only spend $1000 for the engine/tranny. but what i saw is that this car weighs 2200lbs, 127 hp on a bp engine, plus the most u can get out of this engine is high 16's what a bummer!!!

so last week instead of buying that engine (1.8 bp N/A) i bought a crx why? because of the following;
1900lbs. sohc vtec swap 88 SI intake manifold to keep it smog legal, SI tranny for 7,500 redline unlike the 6,000 of the 323's,
they both have 127 hp. bu as u can see the weight is 300 less,
red lines 1500 more, and the engine for this part is way cheaper compare to my 323.......

anyways can u guys give me more info about the 323 maybe i'll change my mind..

I love CRXs, I really wanted to get one before I got the 323. No luck, though....

I'm willing to bet that you could crack into the 15s with a midly-modded BP engine. And I'm sure you could find somewhere that has a BP sitting around with the tranny for under $1000. WIth the extra cash, you could get an intake, and probably get a nice 2.25" custom exhaust.

Still though, you can't go wrong with a CRX. I'm still glad I have my 323 though :)

even the heavier Protege LX's w/BP DOHC can hit 15s mildly mod'd. the 323 should have no trouble at all.

the 323 will be cheaper on insurance too, as it's a not a 2 seater.

if you take it one step further, the BPT DOHC Turbo engine will get you 180-200hp. It's basically the same as the BP but turbo version.

Just wondering, how does an SI tranny get you a 7,500rpm redline??

1ofdfew323 January-25th-2003 05:09 PM

thanks for the reply guys......i have made my decision. I will keep 'em both. 323 for my daily drive (planning on putting it on the show this summer at hot imports nights hopefully) and the crx
atleast hit 13's high w/ 60 nos.
about the 7,500 redline tranny....92-up ecu could only reach 6,800 or 7,200 which means the tranny is only capable of hiiting that much of rpm i mean it hit more than that but it wont be reliable unlike the 88-91 si tranny the ecu goes up to 7,500 redline so that means it is capable of hitting that much ...aight late.

I have an 88 323 GT sedan with a 1.6L dohc tubo. this engine will fit in any 323 with little to no mods. it pushes 135hp@4300 rpm and 150@5500 redline is 6300 much like other 323's. I've waxed every crx, prelude, and integra (stock) my car is pretty much stock the 175hp prelude/integra started pulling on me around 80 mph. The 323 engine is so much more torquey than honda's sure there may be a 1500 rmp redline diff but why weight till 5000 rpm to do what i can do @3000 rpm

PS. My kid bro has an integra LS (sedan) with a 175hp motor and i wax him the whole way.

the BP has a nice powerband throughout its rev range. And it redlines at 7000 and cuts off at 7400.

You could also shove a 1.6 Turbo engine from a 323 GTX into your car without many problems, they are rated at 132hp and can easily be tuned to more than 160 with barely any mods and are CHEAP.

BP's are cheap too, you can get a decent BP and a transmission (your transmissino would bolt up, so i don't know why you'd want a bp trans) for about $400-600 from a JY.

The B6T would be a pretty good option. Driving around my Protege with the BP makes me long for an engine like that in the 323.... It would be very quick. Hell, I think my Protege is quick, and it's bone stock with 150k on it. But, do what ya want :)

I looked into doing mods on my 323 sedan with the b6t. For around a $1000 I can get my car close to 180 hp. its a wicked little engine. 250,000 km and still runs like a top. Pretty danm snappy. I just love coming to a set of lights against some honda guy.

PS i waxed a neon running a 100 shot of nos last year. My only mod...a centerforce II cluch.

this is not true, a stock bp 1.8 can do low to high 15 stock with manual trans. i have a escort gt with power window, power door, cruise control, AC and i did high 15 last summer with no rear seat, 14 degree timing and i'm not a good driver wen is time for racing.

the 1.6bpt is a realy nice engine too and is cost less for you to put in a 323.

That's a quick time. I like your rims, by the way :)

Oh yea, it's 1.6l B6, not BPT... That's the 1.8l as I'm sure you know :)

Really? That's a lot faster than I would think. I also have a '90 lx. I'd like to take it to the strip sometime for shits and giggles. Have any timeslips? I'm not calling BS, I just think that's very impressive :)

thanks to correct me and thanks for the rim :)

i'm going to see how i can do this year with custom cold air intake, rx7 vaf and 2 1/4 exhaust system.

i'm in love with this mazda engine, hehe
i run a ford but i'm in love with mazda hehe.

so 1ofdfew323 did you change your mind now hehe ;)

Liquid_Ag January-28th-2003 05:49 PM

no, but it is slightly faster than my friends 318is which runs 15.9, and so we questimate a 15.8ish run
