Any interest in light fiberglass hoods?
#16
I might be interested as well, but as previously mentioned, pics of the finished product will be very nice. Have one made for you and if it turns out good I am pretty sure that a lot of people will want to get one. If you friend that's making them can fabricate something better than the stock hood as Wil suggested, that would be even better. If anyone has design ideas and suggestions.....post them. Examples with pics will be rather helpful and might spark some new ideas.

(i have a feeling im gonna get the wrong answer to that question. )

Guys please don't get off topic. If you want to start another 'rice' conversation, I'll be kind enough to start a thread in off-topic. As for the pics......that hood looks really nice and will be much better than the stock looking one IMO. Would the guy making them be able to modify the hoods any way we want him to? For example, like the hood pictured above.

Here's a little more information:
The mold will cost about $600 to make. This is for a quality job that can produce multiple parts.
Each fiberglass hood will be about $250-300 each to make, parts and labor.
If we make 5 hoods, the cost of the mold would be $125 each, for a total of $375-425. Obviously, the more we make the lower the cost each person pays for the mold, so the more the merrier.
As for rear hood pins, I envision a bracket that bolts to the two rear strut bolts and extends back about 3". I've got everything on my car and there's still plenty of room, so that shouldn't be a problem.
My original plan was to have a NACA duct built into the front left corner, starting just above the headlight and extending back about 7". This allows room for an outlet into the cavity where the air filter is. I also want a vent in each rear corner, preferably with a mesh cover, to let heat and air pressure out. Both would be included in the cost of the hood, or for a few dollars less it could be totaly stock.
As for the radiator outlet in Wil's MX3 picture, it can be done but will cost some more $$. It means taking a hood and fabricating all those shapes and surfaces, and making another mold. One possiblity is if I can find the duct in fiberglass and add it to one of our glass hoods. Or even build a mold for just the duct, make them, and add them to the hoods. Either way, you're talking a bunch more money.
Speaking of money, we talked about carbon fiber and just the CF alone will be about $300 per hood. That doesn't include resin or labor, so figure around $700 for a CF hood. If that doesn't scare you away, let's talk.
I'm still working with my original plan, simple hood with duct and two vents, for ~$400 each in a lot of 5. More hoods and the cost goes down. It turns out my friend has a bunch of slack time in his schedule and so he could start on this in a couple of weeks. If there's serious interest, this could happen sooner than expected.
I'll try to get a picture of what I'm talking about this weekend, I'll make the duct and vents out of paper and attach them to my car.

PS - I'm not making any profit on this, I just want a light hood with a duct and vents and figured it would be cheaper with more people involved.

how long is he planning on doing all of this? i mean is it a one time deal or can we order stuff later also? the reason i ask is i'll pay 700 for a carbon fiber hood ............i know some ppl are prob gonna think i'm outta my mind crazy but i love the way they look plus i'm young i got no real bills except insurace and a cell phone so to me it wouldn't be a big deal and also most ppl i know are paying between 5 and 700 dollars for these hoods anyway plus it would be totally differen't than everybody else but if i could get it this fall then i'd be interested i can't afford it or even the fiberglass one right now
but i prob could in the fall.......so let me know
p.s. okay your prob tired of all my questions but i got uno mas:
can the fiber come in colors? like red to match my car........or only black? thanks

OK, I have pictures posted - go here to see some ideas of what I have in mind. I was able to find the very hood vents I wanted (Subaru RS style) so that saves me a lot of work.
I should have some firmer prices soon, we're going to figure out the materials more precisely.
As I say on the webpage, my thought now is to make the mold for a completely stock hood, then whatever scoops/vents you want can easily be added. This way no one is locked into someone else's sense of 'cool' and you can get exactly the hood you want. There are a lot of accessory scoops and vents out there. Depending on our time schedules, we may make some of the custom hoods for you.
Think about what you want, look at the various options on the net, and start saving those pennies!

PS - Thapro1 - carbon fiber is black only (it's made of carbon) and we're making the mold strong enough that it can be stored and parts pulled from it later if anyone wants one.

Thapro1,
I just might be able to get what you want. There is now a carbon/kevlar weave, with the kevlar died red, blue, or yellow. You can have a hood that's got the carbon fiber to impress everyone and the red to look cool.
To see it, go to www.carb.com, and click on CARB/KEVLAR on the left side. You'll see a listing of the 3 colors, click on each to see the weave. It's brand new and it ain't cheap.
Otherwise, if you just want it red, get fiberglass and paint it. Saves you a few hundred $$!

I just got an email from Paul about the Subaru vents, they are fiberglass so they'll be easy to integrate into the hood, and if I buy 5 sets the price goes to $60 + $5 shipping each. They are identical to the ones on 98-01 Impreza RS, so take a look and see if it's what you want.
I expect to have firm prices by next Tuesday, so keep an eye out for that.
