92 DOHC Oil Pan Gasket
Hi, I am replacing the oil pan gasket on a '92 DOHC Automatic Protege. Am wondering: does the rubber gasket go between the windage tray and pan -or- does it go beween the block and windage tray? I have the pan off, and it looks like the latter (since I cannot find the old rubber part), but want to confirm.

I just had mine out. I presume that you didn't have any problem with the inverted torx head bolts...
The rubber gaskets (both of them) go between the block and pan in front and between the rear main seal carrier (which looks like it's part of the block) and the pan in the rear.
The windage tray also goes between the pan and block.
Basically as I saw it, the windage is cut so that it doesn't go where the front and rear gaskets are. It only gets sandwiched on the sides of the block where as the two crecent gaskets get sandwiched on the ends of the block.
It sounds like you may not have the windage tray out which could be why you haven't found those two gaskets.

You're gonna want that tray out, otherwise you can't apply RTV properly to both side of the tray.
In fact, are we talking about the same thing? I assumed that by windage tray, you meant that sheet metal liner bolted to the bottom of the main bearing caps.

Sounds like we are talking about the same thing. I did not yet remove the tray. Acouple of follow-ups:
I didn't look close enough: Are those fasteners "external torx bolts"? I have some torx sockets, but not the kind to go around the head, only the kind that fit inside the head.
Do I understand correctly -- after the tray is out and all surfaces are clean, I will place the rubber crescent-shaped gaskets, add sealant, attach the tray, add more sealant and then attach the pan?

Yeah, those TORX bolts were a bit of a surprise to me as well. Everyone that I had talked to hadn't heard of them either. I had to explain it to them that these were to a normal TORX head screw as a normal hex head bolt was to an allen head screw.
I found that after I got everything cleaned and went to reinstall, the windage tray went first, then the two end gaskets and then the pan. Remember, the gaskets seal on the perimeter where the windage tray does not go. Another way to put it is that the gaskets lay next to the windage tray as the middle layer between the block and pan.
BTW, when you go to remove those bolts, I think that there are as many as eight of them. And some are recessed. They're easy to get to, but be sure that you have them all out before you go prying that pan out. You will also have to remove the oil pump snorkel. And when you pry, of course pry the pan fulcruming on a main bearing cap and not the sealing surface of the block.

Thanks to this forum, I finished the job confidently yesterday. Here are a few details FYI:
The ends of the rubber end seals are held in place by the windage tray, so one needs to place the end seals, then the windage tray, put the oil pick-up back on, then the pan. Liberal use of Silicone sealer (all surfaces) should prevent leaks.
I bought the socket fot the E10 External Torx bolts (for the windage tray) at Carquest for $3.52.
Next time, I'll buy a gasket for the oil pickup -- I made my own this time and used the silicone to hold it in place. The original one probably would have remained intact had I not tried to remove it.
