323 Owners ?

323 tach & brake calipers etc...
I have a 1992 323 with a 1.6L SOHC 5 spd
I found that the entire dash cluster from a prot. LX will plug up and work perfectly -- which gets you a nice large tach
I also found that there's a 4 door escort brake caliper (forgot the stamping #) that will bolt up, and gives a larger pad and beefier caliper -- using the stock 323 rotor -- gives you more brake pad on the rotor -- but you have to bolt on a master brake cylinder from a 929 to get the larger internal Master Cylinder piston (1" rather than 7/8"), or the pedal will feel like it has just a bit too much travel -- cause the stock MC has to move a larger caliper now...
Braking does improve with this setup a good bit tho -- enough to make you wanna start doing something about the suspension and all that nosedive...
I also found that both the electric sport mirrors from a prot will bolt up with minor mods to the mounting holes in the doors, and you have to run your own wiring down to the door connector -- get an electic mirror dash switch from an old prot, and plug it up to the connector already in your dash -- and it works!!!
Other JYD mods -- interior roomlight with maplights, 14" stock Prot. 7 spoke wheels and 195/60/R14s (resulted in about a 1" drop), electric dash clock, intermittent wipers
You can also pull off all the intake piping from the throttle body forward, mount the hemholtz box directly to the throttle body with some large diam. tubing and clamps, turning the Hbox sideways (to make your turn), and mount the MAF direct to that, and place a cone airfilter directly on the end of the MAF -- works pretty good, with minimal cost...

Have you swapped out the calipers, or just know that they can be swapped?
I would be worried about the increase in unsprung weight and how the ride quality would be affected.
It's good to know we have an option for more stopping power, though.
MAF? Do you mean the VAF?

Thanks for the good info amigo. I'm going to replace the master brake cylinder from a 929 then, since I got the brake system from the Protege LX in my 323 I guess It will work even better now. I don't think it'll be too difficult to do. Do you have all these mods that you've mentioned in your 323 ? Do you have any pics?

323 mods
yep -- I listed what I've done so far -- now I'm lookin for a good 1.8L to have turbo'd -- any ideas on where to look?
I also heard that the 1.8L turbo will kill our trannys -- and that we need to bring the prot. tranny over with the engine -- and that's where you can pick up the axles and knuckles from the prot -- to get the bigger brakes (eventually, I'd like to try the VR4 brake upgrade)
where did you find the mx3 seats -- I need new seats -- mine are totaly thrashed!!!

Well I picked them up from a local junk yard. I got lucky though, it's rare to see these cars in there. The seats fit perfect just don't forget to get the rails. As for the engine, I know corksport.com has them, they got the GT-X and the GT-R as well. The Protege trainy is not that hard to find, your best chance will be from a Escort GT same thing, made by Mazda. Probably around $ 250 maybe less. I read a post about a guy that dropped a turbo in his Protege without any changes to the engine and he is putting over 200 hp to the wheels and some insane numbers of torque and the trainy seems to be doing ok.
