1990-1994 - Steering Column

Is the steering column adjustable for 1st gen proteges? (is the steering wheel adjustable).

Thinking about buying a P. but i hate steering wheels that rub against your legs.

The LX models have an adjustable steering wheel. I am not sure about the DX models, but I doubt they have it.

Yeah, while we're on the subject.. are they (the steering columns) easily swappable?

And also... is there a big performance difference between SOHC and DOHC versions? or is it minimal?

Well the Dohc had more options standard power windows and locks, puddle lights, cup holders, power mirrors, moonroof, better seats, tilt wheel, a standard tach, some dummy lights, !4 alloys rims (on most ). They had Bigger tires with 4 wheel disc brakes. The rear seat has a fold down arm rest. I think the lx has a bigger sway bar also. They have AC (not sure if the DX came with it)and cruise control. A bigger motor with more power with a stronger transmission. A clock??... There prob more but i can't think of anymore. The dohc also revs to 7000 rpm not 6000 like the sohc model ...Jon

theres a bunch of other information as well... so, when you can't find what you're looking for in the forum, try

--thanks to Mazdaspeedwest

If performance is important to you, you'd have a much better start with a DOHC 1.8 as opposed to the SOHC. I love my LX, it's a quick little car, even with no mods. LXs are cheap and usually pretty avaliable... Check around

Let's say i bought a protege without tilt steering column... if i wanted to get one put in would that be possible? Would i just take it to a local mazda dealer and they could probably do it for a fee?

If you want a tilt-steering column, find one in a wrecking yard, and have a friend who is mechanically inclined do it for like $30-50. The dealer will(and I guarantee this)screw you over if you let them do the work.
Are you sure your car doesn't already have the tilt option? I've never seen one w/o it.....
Look for the black handle on the bottom of the column, you can't see it from above. Pull it and move the column up/down. Let us know.
