Quick Guide For Parts

*This was originally intended for ERDT message board, but since it is still offline, I thought it may have some use here. Sticky it if you thinks it's of any use.

Hi Guys. I thought I would be a Good Samaritan and save everyone some time by creating a list of where to find aftermarket parts for the 1.8 DOHC engine similar to the guide on escortracing.com. These are by no means the only places to find aftermarket products, just a few sites to help ease your search for bp performance parts. There is also a little bit of information about the parts and what you should look for before ordering. Remember, Mazda Miata and protégé parts will interchange into Escort GTs!

I hope this will help people find what they are looking for!

Intakes

Everyone on the board seems to agree that a 2.5 inch diameter intake will work better than a 3 inch for the average enthusiast, however those who are looking for a show style intake or have an engine modified well past stock should look into the 3 inch intake. It has also been noted that removing the small black box behind the MAF will result in a loss of 4 lbs of torque, so remember to keep it on even with an aftermarket intake!

CTA Motorsports- 3 inch polished (scroll to the bottom of the page for 1.8l)

CorkSport- 3 inch polished

Weapon R- (use the application for 90-98 protégé 1.8 DOHC) *no diameter specified

Camshafts

It has been said by many (cough, cough, GRO Harlem, nuff said) that cams are one of the best areas to improve on the 1.8l BP engine. They can be bought from companies such as the ones listed below, or you could have them custom made by a local shop.

Integral Cams- offer 3 stages of cams for different applications

Cam Gears

These adjust the relationship between the crankshaft and the camshaft, allowing for optimized cam angles. These changes in relation to cam and crank can affect the peak HP, its placement in the rev-band, and HP characteristics throughout the rev-band.

Unorthodox Racing-

Ground Wire Kit

Courtesy of GRO Harlem, this page includes a complete how-to as well as information on where to locate ground wire kits. Expected gains are anywhere from a 2-6whp peak gain and at least a 1hp gain throughout the powerband, maybe more.

Underdrive Pulley System

By using light weight pulleys and underdriving engine accessories, a UDP system lessens the amount of hp that is robbed from the wheels. A worthwhile investment.

Unorthodox Racing- They appear to have the best product, so why go elsewhere?

Short shifters

Shortens the time it takes to shift from one gear to another. In a performance situation, the additional seconds (or fractions of a second) a factory stock shifter takes to go from one gear to another can result in slower elapsed times - or just a sluggish feeling when driving around town.

Headers

The two most commonly found are the pacesetter and the Genie headers. Both are available through corksport (of course!) as well as directly from pacesetter. I have never heard of any results from Gude’s racing header.

Pacesetter- The cheap fix, however many have had problems. Still worth a shot.

Corksport-offers both Genie and Pacesetter

Gude Racing- offers a racing header

Motor Mount Inserts

Prevent excessive engine movement within the motor mounts during drag strip style launches.

ZXTuner-

Throttle Bodies

I have only been able to find a throttle body through Gude racing. You can buy it separately or in a racing package. You can also get your throttle body port and polished by a local shop.

Port and Polished Cylinder Heads

Another modification that a local shop can perform, or you can buy them from Gude racing. You can also buy them in a racing package.

GTR Intake Manifold

Came with the GTR engine and seems to only be available through corksport. Flows better than the stock GT manifold on turbo applications. *I’ve never heard about any results about using it on a n/a engine, so I can’t say for sure if it will provide an increase in performance.

Corksport-

Turbo Exhaust Manifold

The only one I have been able to find is from our friends at corksport. Seems well priced and durable seeing as how it was a production car manifold. Works with an IHI turbo and is originally found in a Mazda Familia GTX.

Corksport- (who else?)

http://corksport.com/main.php3?primN...3Fcat%3D227108

Mazda GTX, GTR and KL-ZE Suppliers

Corksport- they have all sorts of engines including the heavily desired GTX (bpt). They also have KL-ZE and can obtain GTRs though it may take some time.

http://corksport.com/main.php3?primN...3Fcat%3D227108

Barely Legal Transplants- They offer the Mazda GTX, GTR and KL-ZE engines at what seems to be a good price.

Nitrous Oxide Systems

Very dangerous. Very expensive. And very fun. Remember, I did not tell you to get NOS and want nothing to do with any responsibilities for your engine blowing or even worse, having you get hurt. Now that I said that, there are many kits available from different companies and applications. This one seemed decent so I thought I would post it.

Those are some helpful links.....especially for the newbies.

It might be a good idea to make this thread a 'sticky' for future reference.
