Question put circle into square?

i ripped out the old stock airbox, and i want to just add a cone filter to the existing pipe, but my question is HOW do you turn the square opening of the VAF into a circular opening to accept a cone filter? also...is that resonator tube necessary or can i melt it into little action figures? whats its purpose? and last but not lease, theres that hose coming into to the square plastic piece before the vaf, like theres the big intake hose, square plastic piece, then vaf, etc, and on the square plastic piece below the main intake hose theres a smaller hose clamped on , i havent followed it back yet but it looks like it goes back to the TB somewhere? is that hose significant? what does it do? i wanted to get rid of the square piece in the middle and just hook up the pipe from the TB directly to the vaf to make some space...

*edit*
i was looking at mazdaspeedwest's site and in that weapon R intake pic theres that black adapter that makes a square a circle, looks like i MAY need that? can i get that somewhere other than a damn weapon R kit?

not real familiar with 1st gen,but i believe if you do the Rx-7 MAF mod it the Rx-7 one has a circular opening...plus it in itself is supposed to increase hp and allow you to flow more air

well the car needs to be ready by friday to go back to college, and ive heard that the rx7 vaf mod is mostly for dohc engines that rev higher than my soch, because it only gives gaines above 6k rpm, and functions the same as the pro vaf under that, i found a couple adapters at like compass motorsports and tradesonic, but i guess CM doesnt exist anymore? and the tradesonic one is kinda pricey after shipping for just an adapter, but i was wonderng if like local auto places sell em?

yeah you're gonna need an adapter. you can get one off of ebay for approx. $10-20. here'a a link to one of the ebay auctions for the filter/adapter. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=1852598912

unfortunately that ebay place cant get it to me before friday unless they priority ship it, but on a side note, that smaller hose going into the square resonater on the TB side of the VAF, that looks like it comes from the TB area....dont unhook it, you car will start and die. i think its some kind of vacuum hose or something. Just thought id share that.

Actually, that hose allows the engine to idle when the throttle is closed. It brings filtered air behind the TB when you are at idle. The idle control circuit uses that air supply to adjust idle speed (higher when cold, when the A/C is on, etc.).

ah now i get why my car was starting then dying instead of idleing. How come when i disconnect it though my car dies? i mean it can still suck in air to behind the TB right? even though that rectangular box takes up some space i'll keep it unless theres another place i can hook up that hose with out my car dying..

Edit: i was thinking about it and would it work if i got a breather element for the crankcase hose thingy that goes from the head to the intake, and used that hole in the intake to clamp the ...rectangle box/tb hose? onto it? i really dont want to/have the time to fab a pipe to use on the intake
