KL vs 1.8

I have almost come to the decision of doing KL Motor swap for my DOHC 1.8. I was wondering about a couple of thing before committing.

One of the things I liked about the DOHC 1.8 in my GT is that I can be fairly aggressive
with the pedal and not really feel it too hard at the pump. Does anyone know what kind of mileage I could expect after the swap?

Additionally, I have been very pleased with the solid reliability of the DOHC motor. Does the KL have the same reliability as the BPD motor? ( I heard in a couple of google threads of people complaining about a bad valve design?).

Lastly, Is the weight/power difference significant enought to change the handling characteristics of the car?

Thanks in advance

Rick

weight difference is not much more for the aluminum V6.

i would expect reliability to be as good as the BP.

If you stomp on it, you will pay...but the V6 is pretty good on gas.

Personally, i just add more when it's empty i don't pay much attention to MPG...

I thought about it a while ago, but ex'd it due to racing class change, but it would be a FUN swap.

I agree with Darryl, it would be a FUN swap! I'm still thinking about it, as well. The only concerns that I have is that if I get coilovers and new struts, I"ll have to ditch them in the front because of needing the mx-6 front suspension. I'm not sure how I could do that. But to me right now, aside from that, it's sounding a little better than the BPT swap. The BPT will yeild MUCH higher HPs, but this is a 'cheap' easy, reliable upgrade. I figured it would have taken upwards of $5k to do a good complete BPT swap the way I wanted it... That's a bit pricey.

Where can I find out about custom spring rates?
Seeing as the suspension will be coming with the swap will there be alot of tweeking in regards to the suspension in order to achive a similar/better handling car?

With regards to replacing the suspension from the donor MX-6, does anyone know if the MX-6 CV axels mate up to my protege hubs?
I would really like to keep as "stock" an appearance to the car if possible.

To keep the 4-lug pattern you'd have to use MX-3 rotors. If you do that, there should be no other indication of what you really have under the hood.

When the swap occurs, I was wondering about the stock dashboard. Specifically, the tach? Having those 2 extra cylinders, does anyone know if I will need to recalibrate(and how?) or even if I can use the MX-6 tach in my cluster?

If you just swap in the MX-3 GS cluster, you'll be fine. You get a 8k tach and 150mph speed too

Use the MX-3 hubs and axles and you can use Protege struts, wheels, and springs.

You'll need a KL, V6 tranny, MX-3 GS crossmembers and engine mounts [might be able to use the Pro's, but I'm not sure], MX-3 axles, KL wiring harness from 92-95 [assuming you want OBD1]

He -has- the BPT, but he hasn't put it in yet. He's running in STS right now.

On a side note, how come you recommend using the MX-3 hubs?
Just curious... Not that I'm going to be doing a V6 swap anytime soon.

Cause they'll work with the MX-3 axles. I don't know the Protege hub spline off the top of my head, but I KNOW the V6 MX-3 hubs will work.

actually, i have all the bolt on to my N/A stuff, not the complete engine...but new avenues have opened and a complete swap is what i am leaning towards now...the questions remains though...4 or 6...

Once you do that....the normal things should be the same...give or take.
well now, thats interesting...since i've now gone the opposite direction....going to swap the Ebachs for the MX3 H&Rs.

Dude, if you go full swap, let me know. I may be interested in your bolt-on turbo parts.

Later on.
