Intake? good/bad?

After i had installed my intake filter and adapter. (replacing my stock intake box w/ stock filter) i have seen a decrease in my MPG AVG. or could it be me hearing the intake (as its louder) and stomping on the gas more. Its kinda pathetic that my SOHC is gettin bout 20-21 avg mpg...thats filling up after 1/2 tank or 1/4 line. I dont get how the DOHC in some of my friends cars get like 26+mpg. But also i have to factor in my car idles bout 200mins a week cause i sit in it before school starts in the parking lot.

Any feedback from anyone is appreciated. i dunno what to do.
hate having a 4cyl with shitty millege. but also could i just need a throttle body service done?

upping my post count...

I've been averaging around 25-26mpg over the past year. Been as low as 22mpg and as high as 29mpg, all well within EPA estimates.

not very exciting eh?

Depending on the mileage of your car, a full tune up and a change of your O2 sensor can bring about a noticeable improvement in mileage. Make sure the tires are properly inflated.

I am averaging about 250 miles city on a tank of gas with my auto 1.8 SOHC and my lead foot (as much as DC traffic will allow). Highway miles are pretty good..I can get around 415 miles per tank with A/C working at a mild 1 or 2 setting.

when i added my intatke i lost alot of gas(city, highway i was getting a lil more). When i got my car stock i was getting about 30 mpg. Then after the intake was in i was getting about 25mpg. Then i put my muffler on and it went back up to 30mpg (all average).

Measuring Gas Mileage

To compare gas mileage before and after you would have to run the exact same route. This is pretty difficult in city driving so I would not use city mileage as a measure of whether a change in equipment affected mileage. But you can do it if you drive the exact same route before and after. I think throwing in long periods of idling into the mix is monkey wrench you should avoid during the measurement cycle.

Instead, use a mileage measurement that is very predictable and steady. Do a before and after and you have ligitimate numbers to compare.

I get 30 mpg highway, and I drive like a madman. I go to the mountains mileage dips to 28 mpg. I cruise at 60 MPH and get 32 mpg.
