Serveral things...

1. Poor Fuel Economy
2. Hard Starting
3. Loss of power
4. Misfire
5. Poor Idle
6. Engine Noise

Some that come to mind.

I would replace them every 30,000 miles minimum
before any of that starts. I noticed you use the
BOSCH Platinum Spark Plugs. I have not had
any luck with those plugs in other cars.
I simply replaced the Protege plugs with
original equipment plugs. They are
NGK BPR5ES11. Mazda Engineers tuned
the car with these plugs, something to keep
in mind. I noticed reduced Engine noise
right away. As you know, always verify
proper gap.

could the spark plugs as in misfire mean like when you push the gas when out of gear and it sputtering when you start it up on cold start have anything to do with that also?

Got mine at Advance for like 2 bucks each.
Wouln't worry about the plug wires, yet. I would
squirt some Dielectric grease inside the boot
on the plug. Helps prevent spark to the block,
and keeps out moisture.

In regards to misfire... yeah it could do as you decribe.
Also, listen carefully during driving speed for misses.
They can become more noticible at idle and low speeds.
I guess what I'am saying if it's missing, it will do it through
out all driving speeds.

In anycase it should not sputter as you describe, it isn't normal.
Plug are a good place to start. It would be interesting to know
what the electrodes on the plugs look like.

Ask the guys at Advance if they get any problems with those
plugs. I bet they do on certain cars. I took mine back after about
a week with no receipt and they gave me my money back. That
here in Virginia though.

Best Regards

ngk is nice but bosch platnum +4 is good too. I use them. The ngk is much cheaper and is a must for performance ignitions but platnum lasts longer in non performance cars.

Bosch + 4s are crap. Stick with NGK.
