Hi... another gtx question :)

Hi, i'm new to the mazda land So yeah... have question about the swap. I did search, found out most stuff i wanted, but still wondering about some stuff. I know you guys are tired of gtx motor questions, after all i'm coming from a 240sx message board where sr20det swap questions are asked every single day

Anyways. A little preface. Me and my buddy are looking for a rally car for the next year season (rallyX and hopefully ClubRally as well). Now considering our low budget, need for a nice handling car with potential, we decided on a 1st gen protege. And so thus we are here

Ok, so on to the gtx stuff. From what i found and read up, the swap is a direct drop into the LX. Now some problems i found, and questions about them

1. The ECU... From what i understand, corksport doesnt provide any ecus with their engines... nor any other supplier that i saw? Is there any place they can be purchased? I think i saw a link somewhere among the threads from the search page, but couldnt find it on the second run. Alternatively, i saw people saying that stock ecu holds up to 14psi then leans out.... So lemme get this straight. Both engines come with the same exact injectors, but the ECU on the BP engine doesn't map the MAF readings after the 14psi mark. Is that the case? So, im supposing the best alternative would be to run a standalone?

2. The wiring... Again, corksport doesnt list this as part of the engine shipped package. Where can it be purchased? And how much splicing has to be done for the stock harness in order to make it work with GTX motor? Also heard that the GTX ECU doesnt support the check engine light. Is that again true? If so, how hard is it to fix (need a street legal car for ClubRally ). Finally, also read that the harness has to be extended due to the fact that the gtx harness goes on through the other side of the firewall. Is that also true?

3. Now on to the stuff i read at BLT. The rising rate fpr. Is that really required? For the 240s, rrfprs were sometimes used when attempting to run on stock injectors with upped fuel pump while being passed the injectors limit level (that's for people who turbocharged their stock 2.4 KA24DE motors, like me ). Given the protege has both the already capable injectors and a walbro fuel pump, is it necessary to get the rrfpr?

4. Ok a simple one How much boost will a BPT ECU support?

5. Here is a list i guess of ECU setups... which will be better and easier to tune?

a. BP ECU + SAFC + MSD Retard Unit?
b. Standalone
c. BPT ECU... (And in case the stock BPT ecu cant support the required boost level: BPT ECU + SAFC)

6. Any other harness/ECU/wiring problems that i should be aware of?

7. Ok, so if i get the engine and one of the choices from 5., what else would i need? IC+piping, exhaust, downpipe (do the engines come with it and does it bolt in the stock exhaust position?), BOV (as an upgrade), Boost controller... anything else?

8. And the last one that should go into the suspension most likely, but ill ask here to save space. Does the protege come with a limited slip or unlimited slip? If the latter one, are there any upgrades other than the quaiffe lsd? Like phantom slip for example? And also, are there premade rollcages available for the protege?

Thats all Thanx!

Well holy poop, that alot of q's. I can answer a few.

Goto http://www.alljapaneseengines.com/in...&rand=72454259

They have an uncut wire harness with ecu for less than corksport i belive.

About the injectors. The ones in a NA bp are differant that those on the BPT. 360 cc i think in the BPT while 280cc in the NA motor.

Personsaly i am going with my stock ECU with an SAFC, and a jacobsboost master timing controller. I am not dropping a GTX in, I am turboing my existing motor. If you get the ECU and all, you dont need a timing controller, or SAFC until you want to up the stock boost (8psi)

To get it running, you will need IC piping, an IC, BOV, boost controller if you would like and exaust piping. If you get a GTX engine, most likely it will have the down pipe off of the outlet side. I got my turbo from corksport and asked them if they could include it and they did. After that it is just a matter of new piping, 2.25-2.5 is reccomended for ours cars with turbo.

I dunno about the diffs, but a good spring/strut combo is the Eibach sprngs and tokico struts. They lower about 1 inch and the ride is amazing.

Well hope this helps, im sure that the other turbo brains will chime in. But do a little searching here on the board, some of this stuff is already out there. Later

Hey, jsut noticed ur from MD. Cool. Im in college now but will be home for winter break. That is when I plan on doin my setup if i get some mre funds. Would be glad to help out and what not

Ok, well nobody else is chiming in heh. Well done some search on the BPT ECU and harness. So seems i need to extend the wiring and redo some of the connectors as they are not the right way on the stock harness. Is that all? Is there a site with the info on which connectors should be exchanged? The electrical question is bothering me the most, since ECUs and harness is one thing i hate the most about cars

You have to extend the harness you will get, and there are a few wires you have to splice into the dash stuff i belive. You might want to try http://www.clubprotege.com/forum/index.php

http://erdtforum.teamzx2.com/index.php?sid=3e4043eb5be981ced6d0f29dfe005af6[/url] (thats the escort forum)

These palces might be ofmore help. PM me if you have any troubles.

Ok, clubprotege was of little help. Actually of no help. The escort msg board was much better, yet it still brought in some more confusion heh.

Ok so someone confirm this:

BPT ECU + BPT Harness => extend the harness, some minor rewiring.

BPT ECU + BP Harness => Some splicing in from the BPT harness

BP ECU + BPT Harness => No workie?

BP ECU + BP Harness => Splicing in from BPT harness, safc?

Also read that mazda ecus have a specific setting at WOT which overrides the signal coming in. Which makes safc not so efficient. Which leads to running the BPT ECU or a standalone, which i cant afford right now. So i mostly care about the first two above. Thanx

OK....

Yes, and yes.

BPT ECU + BP Harness => Some splicing in from the BPT harness
Nope

BP ECU + BPT Harness => No workie?
Nope

BP ECU + BP Harness => Splicing in from BPT harness, safc?
This will work for the BP engine, not the GTX engine. The GTX has a knock sensor, and the BP doesnt. If you turbo the BP a SAFC will work, but if you get the 4 wire TPS off of a Auto. protege or escort GT it will work properly.

Talk to turbge, he has a company that used to sell GTX's and such. He knows what he is talking about.

here is couple things that i might help u with.
engine bolts in.
you can use lx trans but u need lx upgrade clutch and lx flywheel, bpt clutch and flywheel is difrent
front motor mount needs to be modified to clear stock bpt turbo outlet pipe
u need to use slick fan lx fan is too thick
you can make lx harnes work but u will need to add shielded wires for tps and knock sensor
bpt harnes dont need to be extended just routed difrent way
bpt harnes needs to be modified, fuel pump circut is diffrent
bpt ecu cuts fuel at around 14 psi but if u play with vaf and have fuel preasure regulator u can run more boost(im runing 19 psi)
stock injector on bpt are 310cc

Ah. That clarifies a lot of stuff.

Ok, so if im going to go turbo back on the exhaust, i dont have to modify the engine mount?

Also. The lx harness, after some splicing in, is that going to work with BPT ECU, BP ECU or both?

And last one, the fuel curcuit rewiring. How hard is it? Are there any illustrations or anthing? Or is it figure out as u go along type of thing? I think i saw couple of links to that, but im not sure, since they were all dead.

the pipe im talking about is the outlet on the preasure side of the turbo
if u splice lx harnes to match a bpt ecu it will only work with bpt ecu
the fuel pump circut needs to be rewired on bpt harnes only, the gtx with bpt has 2 fuelpumps one is transfer pump and other is main pump and bpt has anothere relay for that its caled a fuel pump module it best to by pass it and use circut opening relay as a fuel pump realy as is used on lx.
i dont know about any diagrams on internet and if u get a bpt and bp wiring diagrams and look at them you will see what im talking about

Ok well i had a really busy month but now im back And im back with an actual rally-car-to-be hehe (91 EGT w/150K for $950)

The engine is still in good condition for its miles and for now its going to be enough hp for our skill level, but i am raising the swap question again.

So i did some more research. I decided to buy the engine from www.alljapaneseengines.com and they say that the engines come with bpt harness and ecu. I'm going to call them up and talk today or tomorrow, but assuming everything is fine, im going to go with them.

Now last questions i had:

1. the fuel relay is the ONLY thing that has to be modded on the bpt harness?
2. How hard is it to mod the front mount?
3. can the bp vaf be used for bpt?
4. Is this list of stuff i need complete?

a. Engine w/ ecu and harness
b. intercooler + piping
c. fuel pump
d. new fan
e. clutch
f. exhaust

starting out small, upgrading as we go.

and im still confused as to how much boost will the bpt ecu maps support w/o addition fuel management.

The wastegatte is set at 8psi, and I heard that when it is at 5000+ RPMs it goes to 10-12 i think.
