help! wheel bearings

ok i have a fishy transmission guy i take my car too, he does a damned good job with the tranny, but ALWAYS brakes a wheel bearing or two in the process. this time i got sick of it. i bought the wheel bearings and wheel seals for both the front wheels, since both are broken n grinding like nothing. I would like to replace them my self but ive heard replacing bearings is a bitch for a home mechanic, i have tools, but just the usual. am i better off taking my parts to a local garage and having them put them in? my haynes manual doesnt even say anything about replacing bearings...
