Thumbs up wheel bearings

Gentlemen,
I own a 2000 LX with 167,000 miles on it. Wheel bearings grinding. Is anyone aware of how they can be replaced? Is it difficult? should i bring it to a garage? Any help is appreciated.

Front? They are pressed in (AFAIK) and really need to be done at a shop. Others have replaced the entire CV joint assembly (w/ bearings, etc) since they are just as worn and the labor is the same...

Get estimates from a shop - that would be the best indication.

i dont know for a fact but I don't think the bearings are pressed in. The easiest way to find out is to yank the rotor and see if they come out!

If they're anything like the back then they just pop out. You'll need a screwdriver to pop off the aluminum cap, a really really big socket to unscrew the giant bolt and it should just slide off.

Yet again I know this works for the back, but whether the front is the same I'm not sure.

Mine 96 protege front wheel bearing was done at a garage last week, it happened I was there watching the whole process. It seemed to me that if you guy would try to do it yourself, you should need a 40-ton hydraulic presser to separate the wheel bearing from its bracket. Total cost was around 180 cnd, labour included.

That is what i expected.

Consider replacing the whole unit - CV joints and axle assy. You can do it 'easily' and the CVs are worn too.

My $.02 worth.
